Good Bye
Today is my last day at Beliefnet (which I co-founded in 1999). The swirling emotions: sadness, relief, love, humility, pride, anxiety.
But mostly deep, deep gratitude.
How many people get to come up with an idea and have rich people invest money to make it a reality? How many people get to create

My Big News
Dear Readers,
This is the most difficult (and surreal) post I've had to write. I'm leaving Beliefnet, the company I co-founded in 1999.
In mid November, I'll be stepping down as President and Editor in Chief to lead a project on the future of the media for the Federal Communications Commission, the

Secularizing the Cross (Christian Activists: Be Careful What You Wish For)
The Supreme Court heard oral arguments this week, in Buono v. Salazar, about whether a white 6 1/2 foot cross can be displayed in a national park as a tribute to World War I soldiers. Though it's depicted as a classic clash of the secular and the religious, it actually illustrates why Christian act

When Joseph Farah and Rush Limbaugh pray that President fails , they don’t realize that they have set a pit for themselves !

How disgusting. Absolutely disgusting. And they consider themselves Americans and patriots….which is scary. As much as I depised the presidency, actions, and personality of now ex-President George W. Bush, I never prayed for him to fail. As a Christian, a Catholic, and as an American, how could I pray for my freely elected President to fail?!? This is what is wrong in this country. These right-wing nutjobbers who hide behind the veils of “faith”,”Christianity”, and the Bible. Yes, nowhere in the Bible does it teach us to obey evil rulers, but how can Mr. Farah call President Obama an evil ruler? How can he cast stones when he lives in a glass house? He is entitled to his opinions of dislike. But to use faith and the Bible to support his opinions, is hypocritical and evil in and of itself. The Bible does not teach us to obey evil rulers, but the Bible also does not teach us to pray for the failure of fellow humanbeings. The fact that Mr. Limbaugh and Mr. Farah call themselves Christians is shameful.

I cannot believe a person would go as far as to pray for failure of a President to bring about necessary change. As many times as Bush failed to be truthful — and admittedly taking the United States into a war in Iraq under false premises, causing the deaths of thousands of our own people and untold thousands of innocent people in Iraq — we, as citizens of this country did not even impeach Bush…and he failed without our prayers for his failure! Now, to pray for failure of a new President, without even being given time to try and help this country back on its feet, Joseph Farah praying for failure? The Bible I’ve read teaches to pray for the good in each of us to stand up and do our part to help others.

These thoughtless remarks by hollow prophets and indolent idols of the airwaves only shows that they know they have nothing else to say. That Obama does not agree with them adds more credibility to Obama’s work and simply tarnishes their already corroded shell. W failed by his own foolishness and inability to lead. I believe Obama will succeed because of his care and certain leadership.

Remember what happen when Focus on the Family prayed for rain on the night of Obama’s acceptance speech last August.
Both Bush Presidents are very friendly with Limbaugh. They socialize together.

You know folks, instead of judging Rush Limbaugh without even knowing what you’re talking about, why don’t you actually go straight to the source to understand what he means instead of taking his words out of context?

Pray all you want Joseph Farah, it won’t make a damn bit of difference. And neither will anybody who prays FOR Obama either. There’s nobody up there listening. And even if there is, it couldn’t be clearer that he/she/it couldn’t care less what’s going on down here.

it really does not matter if you voted for or against obama. scripture calls us to pray for those that lead us. regardless of who was voted into the white house, God sits on the throne and is always in control. maybe instead of praying against the elected leader, maybe we should pray as Jesus did “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” our obedience to the One True Living God leads to the healing of our land. despite the leadership of this or any other country, let us look to the hills to which our health and blessing flow and remember that He, God, holds our future.

You mean like conservatives did with the words of Rev. Wright last year?
Yeah…didn’t think so.

RJohnson makes a great point. People judged Rev Wright from a few seconds clips without listening to his entire sermons, which were very good. Yet former Presidents Bush hung out with Limbaugh.

I think we need to pray for Rush Limbaugh! He’s so angry at President Obama for his recent (TRUE) comments about him that he’s trying to turn the world against Obama. Limbaugh is a tired, bitter hater that needs a booster shot of compassion, love and forgiveness.

Rush is a LARGE waste of hot air! I can’t even listen for 2 seconds without wanting to throw the radio out the window…thus I don’t bother to waste my time listening to him. He is so full of hate towards anyone who doesn’t think like he does it is unreal. It must hurt him a lot to know that “W”s mistakes and horrible 8 year “reign” is OVER and there is actually a man in the White House who is working to undo the 8 year disaster caused by the RR!!!
posted January 28, 2009 at 12:19 pm
If I was going to pray for anything it would be that folks turn off the radio and stop listening to that person, Limbaugh. IMO nothing he says is constructive…only distructive.
posted January 28, 2009 at 5:14 pm
Rush Limbaugh is certainly something else to deal with and so is his radio companion from Fargo, ND (sorry, can’t remember his name right now, but he is just as radical.) I believe we as a country need to pray that God will lead and guide President Obama to do the best for the United States. Everything certainly went wrong with Mr Bush running this country and our standing in the world hit rock bottom while he was in office. There has been enough negative thinking about our new president. Let’s give him a chance and remember him in our prayers.
posted January 29, 2009 at 5:25 pm
Why–tell me why–anyone gives Rush the time of day, or even dignifies what he says by arguing with him? O for the days of honest-to-God decent, idea-based political debate, from such lights as Buckley. Now that was a conservative, in the truest sense of the word.

Andy and others who malign Rush: I listen Rush, and I am an intelligent, very well educated critical thinker, and from my perspective, as a professor of rhetoric, I think Rush does a superb job of offering his claims and proofs. His arguments are always grounded on sound premises and if you listen to them, you will find that they are logical. Perhaps that is why President Obama does not want the Republicans to listen to him, because he is so logical. I would suggest that those of you who argue against him have probably not ever taken the time to listen to him yourselves but have an image of him based on what you have read or heard. Perhaps you need to really listen to him and not listen to naysayers and those, like our new President, who would like to eliminate any speech he does not agree with by enacting the Fairness Doctrine. When government begins to take action to reduce free speech, even if you agree with the act at that moment, beware, for your free speech will be next. You would be wise to study how Hitler gained power in the Third Reich, and I do not say that lightly or as some radical nutcase but as a thoughtful analysis of reality. I too pray Obama fails in his efforts to enact his policies.

If Obama fails to turn around the disastrous mess that that faithful but thoroughly incompetent President Duh left us in, America fails.
Accordingly, Why do those who want Obama to fail, including HeadRush Pillpop and Joseph Farah, and L. Carroll want America to fail? Why do they hate America?

Why pray for someone to fail? Why not pray for him to correct things that must be corrected?

L.Carroll PhD.:
I HAVE listened to Rush (and also am college educated). I DON’T listen to him anymore. Once or twice was all I could stand. Fortunately the radio station I listened to stopped running his crap, oh, I mean talk show. The government hasn’t taken Rush off the air…thus no censorship. This isn’t Germany in WWII. I disagree with your thoughtful analysis. This country needs all the help we and our new President can give. The censorship you mentioned? Try 8 years of the previous president!

In the Revised Standard Version of the Bible we read in the 4th Chapter of Luke 18th verse. “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord”.
I see this as President Obama’s theme song. His promises during the campaign as well as his actions in the first few weeks of his Presidency. He lived up to those promises and shows himself to be a person of integrity, uprightness, and fortitude. He is God’s instrument in the world, whether he knows it or not. God chose him long before he became President. Let’s pray God keeps him safe from the crazy’s of this world.

I know this is a bit of an old thread, just came across it and had to point out to L. Carroll, PhD: you are no professor of rhetoric. The only argument you mobilized was your name(PhD) and saying you are a rhetoric professor. You used no other proof. Any rhetoric professor worth their salt could construct a better argument in a blind drunk.
P.S. I actually am a rhetoric professor; I guess that should mean something. Next time, spend that energy actually making a decent argument. I don’t want you giving us a bad name.

This was an old thread four months ago. I do not see how anyone can argue with Rush Limbaugh or Joe Farah. I have not always prayed for Obama to fail, but I have prayed he will repent. Since HR 3200 has come out of committee, and Obama supports it, I am praying he will fail. This is a terrible attack on our Constitution. The purpose of the bill is not to provide a public option for healthcare insurance, it is to put private insurance companies out of business. Read pages 16-17. The section supposedly guaranteeing you can keep your health coverage actually makes it impossible for you to do it. The insurance cmopanies are not allowed to sell insurance to any new people. And the policy cannot be changed in any way. How would you like if the government passed a law to take over your industry? This is a fundamental violation of our freedoms.
