Why Did FDR Start Having Prayers at Inaugurals?

posted by swaldman | 5:47pm Sunday January 18, 2009

fdr second inaugural.gifAs I’ve been foraging through the history of inaugural prayers, one question has remained a mystery: why, in 1937, did Franklin Roosevelt start the tradition?
Professor Mark Silk has come up with an interesting and plausible theory.
Prior to 1937, the vice presidents were sworn in by their predecessor in the Senate chamber. A prayer was said after the swearing in. Roosevelt decided to have the vice presidential swearing in be part of the main event. Not wanting to deprive the Senate chaplain of his prayer role, he moved to the big stage too.
In addition, Silk argues, Roosevelt undoubtedly saw a political opportunity so he created a second clergy slot and gave it to Msgr. John A. Ryan — who was a major Catholic supporter of the New Deal.
Read Silk’s full theory and description of Ryan’s fascinating role as a FDR ally.

Good Bye
Today is my last day at Beliefnet (which I co-founded in 1999). The swirling emotions: sadness, relief, love, humility, pride, anxiety. But mostly deep, deep gratitude. How many people get to come up with an idea and have rich people invest money to make it a reality? How many people get to create

Secularizing the Cross (Christian Activists: Be Careful What You Wish For)
The Supreme Court heard oral arguments this week, in Buono v. Salazar, about whether a white 6 1/2 foot cross can be displayed in a national park as a tribute to World War I soldiers. Though it's depicted as a classic clash of the secular and the religious, it actually illustrates why Christian act

Yes, a move that clearly has politics written all over it – I am a proud godless American and find the tradition of prayers at the inaguration or before congressional sessions insulting and frankly…Un-american! It is divisive to speak of gods – seriously – at a public event! I gave my energies for the Obamas election but found the most disturbing aspects of his entire campaign/presidency so far have been 1. Reverend Wright 2. Rick Warren. Anything religious has NO place in politics. It always taints – always. Someday – I admit in a too distant future – religious cult belief of all stripes will recede to a proper place; and Jesus – Mohammed God and Mary will studied with relics Zeus and Saturn and other god heroes of the human imagination. Primitive outlandish concepts and utterances (prayer) – divisive at core – have no place in our public celebrations or day to day activities.
