How Sub-Prime Mortgages Kill People

posted by swaldman | 9:21am Thursday April 2, 2009

From today’s Nick Kristof column:

“According to World Bank estimates, the global economic crisis will cause an additional 22 children to die per hour, throughout all of 2009.
And that’s the best-case scenario. The World Bank says it’s possible the toll will be twice that: an additional 400,000 child deaths, or an extra child dying every 79 seconds.”

here’s how the trickle down effect works:

“In a slum hospital, where admissions for malnutrition have doubled since September, I met a woman who used to sell shoes on the street. Shoe sales dropped with the sagging economy, so the woman was forced to use her sales revenue to buy food for her child instead of to replace inventory. Now she has no more merchandise to sell, no food to eat and the child she cradled was half dead with starvation.”

We have no concept of the moral consequences of our mistakes.

Today is my last day at Beliefnet (which I co-founded in 1999). The swirling emotions: sadness, relief, love, humility, pride, anxiety. But mostly deep, deep gratitude. How many people get to come up with an idea and have rich people invest money to make it a reality? How many people get to create

Secularizing the Cross (Christian Activists: Be Careful What You Wish For)
The Supreme Court heard oral arguments this week, in Buono v. Salazar, about whether a white 6 1/2 foot cross can be displayed in a national park as a tribute to World War I soldiers. Though it's depicted as a classic clash of the secular and the religious, it actually illustrates why Christian act

Obama and the Democrats caused the world’s financial crisis by forcing and encouraging banks to issue loans to uncreditworthy subprimes including blacks and other worthless people. Obama himself even sued Citibank to force it and other banks to hand out money to uncreditworthy blacks! Now citibank and other banks are on the brink of bankruptcy. But hey, Obama and the Democrats have always been about killing babies (abortion) so it is nothing new to them to kill children. When are people going to start killing the rich democraps and donating their wealth to pay for this mess?
