I'm slightly surprised that the White House press office gave out this image, from her 1976 Princeton yearbook, in which she quotes Norman Thomas. Norman Thomas was, of course, the leading American Socialist politician of the 20th century. Perhaps they...
The Norman Thomas High School in Manhattan and the Norman Thomas '05 Library at Princeton University's Forbes college are named after him. He was also the grandfather of Newsweek columnist Evan Thomas.[20]
A plaque in the Norman Thomas '05 Library reads: Norman M. Thomas, class of 1905. "I am not the champion of lost causes, but the champion of causes not yet won."

David, "avowed Christian"? What? She's avowed no such thing. Reporters had to dig to find out she's Catholic, because she does nothing to identify herself in that way. She may well be Christian, but she certainly isn't "avowed". And as we well know, just because someone was raised Catholic doesn't mean that they're actually faithful Catholics.
Freelunch... what if she'd had an inspiring quote from, say, Trotsky? Or Mao? You quote people you admire, so picking Thomas is an insight to her thinking. And yes, it matters, because socialism is evil. It always results in assaults on the church. Wherever socialism is, there is also a drive to wipe faith from the Earth. This matters.

There is plenty enough to oppose her nomination and this is just petty and makes conservatives look petty. It's not a socialist quote per se, but it does demonstrate that she admires someone who was a prominent socialist and that makes me uncomfortable
As for the Christian angle. I am sick and tired of people making this argument. I do not consider what someone calls themselves. Nor am I impressed with someone who regularly attends church. A little history lesson for y'all. Christians haven't always been acolytes of amoral capitalism and fierce defenders of the privileged. There have in fact been Christian socialists, such as Norman Thomas:
Norman Thomas was born November 20, 1884 in Marion, Ohio, the oldest of six children of a Presbyterian minister. Thomas had an uneventful midwestern childhood, helping to put himself through Marion High School as a paper carrier for Warren G. Harding's Marion Daily Star. Like other paper carriers, he reported directly to Florence Kling Harding. "No pennies ever escaped her," said Thomas. The summer after he graduated from high school his father accepted a pastorate at Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, which allowed Norman to attend Bucknell University. He left Bucknell after one year to attend Princeton University, the beneficiary of the largesse of a wealthy uncle by marriage.[1] Thomas graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University in 1905.[2]
After some settlement work and a trip around the world, Thomas decided to follow in his father's footsteps and enrolled in Union Theological Seminary. He graduated from the seminary and was ordained as a Presbyterian minister in 1911.[3] After assisting the Rev. Henry Van Dyke at the fashionable Brick Presbyterian Church on Manhattan's Fifth Avenue, Thomas was appointed as pastor for the East Harlem Presbyterian Church, ministering to Italian-American Protestants.[4] Union Theological Seminary had been, at that time, a center of the Social Gospel movement and liberal politics, and as a minister, Thomas preached against American participation in the First World War. This pacifist stance led to his being shunned by many of his fellow alumni from Princeton, and opposed by some of the leadership of the Presbyterian Church in New York. When church funding of the American Parish's social programs was stopped, Thomas resigned his pastorate.[5] Despite this resignation of his position, Thomas did not formally leave the ministry until 1931, after his mother's death.[6]

Christians seem to have a knee-jerk reaction to socialism regardless of the fact that it seems to be the economic system most in line with Jesus' teachings. After all, it was the early church who sold everything they had and put it in a giant fund for the benefit of all of them. Taking all you have and giving it to the poor isn't the most capitalistic ideal, is it?
Anonymoose
May 27, 2009 1:52 PM
I'm not sure that Thomas' being a minister at one time is particularly relevant in some ways -- at least not unless the fact that (I'm 90% certain I've read) he sadly lost his faith in Christ while keeping it in socialism is also reported.
By most reports he was a decent man, but his "progressive" politics intertwined, unsurprisingly, with a loss of faith in the actual Kingdom of God.

As Americans and Christians, one must remember the power we have--therefore, the "advocates of error" or "deception" will be seen by the good people of this nation. Have faith in our people to right wrong. For example, the President wanted to charge veterans who had health care cards and are disabled. To make a long story short, the President lost on that one by the huge voices of the veterans telling their leaders not to approve this action against veterans. Point being, don't be troubled by this nominee--who more than likely will be approved. Remember, we have the last "voice of decision" against wrong. Thank God for our Founding Fathers and their wisdom!

What is there to go on to classify her as a socialist? This yearbook quote sure doesn't get it. Its a decent enough sentiment. Its a far cry from Hilary Clinton's senior thesis on Saul Alinsky. What's wrong with socialism, anyways?
Well, as a previous commenter suggested, socialism is a far cry from any idyllic Christian way of life. Aside from one or two isolated and shallow concepts that are associated with socialism. "From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs;" and as a false dichotomy to immoral, unfettered, greed-addled capitalism run amok.
Both in theory and in practice, true socialism ALWAYS and WITHOUT EXCEPTION becomes a mortal enemy to religion... any religion, any denomination, any spiritual practice, any recognition of the transcendent.
Socialism is militant atheism, which oppresses and murders based solely on religious practice; regardless of the economic or political status of the spiritual practitioners. Hundreds of millions of innocent, unarmed, economically disadvantaged and politically powerless have been oppressed by socialists in the 20th century; tens of millions of innocents killed.
Capitalism is man oppressing his fellow man.
Socialism is just the opposite.
We don't have to chose between one or the other. Both systems can have some merits, both some pitfalls. Maybe a blend, guided by the Holy Spirit and in a context of respect for religious practice is a good place to start for an economic system.

I don't think so.

What's wrong with a smart person who accepts his/her limitations and at the same time fights for what he/she believes in?
If you think about it deeply, Mr.Obama and Mr.Bush are both very similar, but with a radically different life experience, therefore with different goals. But in the base they are like most of us, religious and self honest persons trying to do it the best we know.
Please, men and women, make a little effort to open your minds and even if you are sure you will never be agree with someone, just for a moment try to get inside that other person's mind and imagine the world can be seen from another perspective, and how would it look like. I would hope that you honestly do not believe what you have written. Racism in this nation is still around but now under different management. I live and work with a diverse group of individuals and in most cases I see more racism from those who squeal the loudest. GET OFF YOUR BUTT AND QUIT BLAMING EVERYONE ELSE FOR YOUR SHORT COMMINGS!! I take people as I find them as individuals everyone gets a fair shake until they give me a reason through their actions to change my mind. That is one of the principles behind the true founding of this nation. We all have an equal opportunity for success not the promise of equal results. If you want anything in life you have to GET OFF YOUR A$$ AND WORK! THERE ARE NO FREE LUNCHES!!!
Bush and Obama are similar in the fact that they have both expanded government beyond the scope and breadth of their predecessors with the exception of Ronald Wilson Reagan who helped to decrease the size of government. If people were left to live their lives we would all be better off. As far as the honesty thing goes are you truly that naive or are you stupid. We have a government run by two parties who have their own interest at heart and not the welfare of the nation. It is a society operated on the new golden rule."He who has the gold makes the rules" No longer are we a nation of the people, for the people, and by the people it is all for the money and how can I work this situation to my benefit. Look at Blago in IL and Burris. Oops guess who helped to campaign for Blago....Barry O so do not speak of Honesty and integrity when clearly those in Washington have neither. Look also at involvement with an organization indicted in 14 states for voter registration fraud with money ties to the Dems. Check it out. ACORN is a sham and so is Obam.....These people are destroying the greatest nation on the face of the Earth and people like you are helping them do it. We need to stand on the principles of our founding fathers outlined in the Constitution that we the people are the ones in charge not politicians and bureaucrats. We must do this without compromise. Compromising our principles is what got us in this mess to begin with. Who knows better what you need in life that you? Some politician in DC? Some civil servant at the welfare office? Some political party hack? No one knows how to run your life better than you. They are not the answer they are the problem. I have seen what is in the mind of these people and it is frightened me. They are empty heads, empty shells with no soul. Zombies are their followers. It is our duty to question everything that they do and we have fallen short on our end. We went on vacation and left the kids to their own devices. An unruly child is what we have here and this child needs a spanking in the worst possible way. Election time is coming.

Minor associations Please…..Sotomayor is a member of La Raza which means “the Race” minor associations…..Her racist comments if reversed would have gotten a white man stoned to death hung and then tarred and feathered. La Raza advocates the idea that the southwest should secede and go back to Mexico. They also believe that our Immigration laws should not be enforced. AH HA I thought a Judge was supposed to uphold the law. How can you be a member of a group that wants to circumvent it. It is only a minor association. Before you go off on that one….I support LEGAL IMMIGRATION! No one who follows the rules and lawfully enters this nation should be turned away. The law is the law and if it is violated we have the right and responsibility to enforce it. Not to just ignore it if we feel like it.
“We are a nation of laws”-Thomas Jefferson
Barry O gave ACORN $800,000 listed at first for lighting and staging for an event later listed as get out the vote efforts. Lest we forget the NY Times killed a story that linked Obama’s camp to giving the group a list of all of his maxed out donors so they could then get money from them and funnel it back to his election efforts. They have admitted to killing the story but no one has questioned them on that really. ACORN is so corrupt its own board members are now calling for an investigation and no one will do it. The Dems get too much money from them and the repubs are afraid of being labeled as racists. The corruption has to stop.
Please do not besmirch God in a political discussion. If we lived by His laws we would not need the laws on the books now. The Ten Commandments pretty much cover it all if you actually have the intellect to apply and live by a code of morals but that is inconvenient and impedes my feel good and do what want lifestyle. People are the problem in government and in religion. The ideas and beliefs are sound at the foundation but we often twist them to fit our agenda and work the situation to our advantage.

Sotomayor is the least of my concerns; the growing need for Democrats to raise my taxes while reducing charitable write-offs is disturbing. If one cannot deduce the blatant Socialist redistribution attempts of “change” then back to the well of cool aide (sorry for the cliché). Success/wealth is quickly becoming synonymous with greed and evil. Little regard is given to those who earned what they have – not visa via “blue blood” lines, but rather of our own volition – no handouts, aid, nor governmental help. It is no wonder many persons of solid means have off-shored their funds…I only wish I had taken such advantage much earlier in my professional career. Enough looking toward the wealthy to fix governmental cash flow/deficit woes; I could care less be it Democrat or Republican as to blame for fiscal mismanagement. Hands off the money I earned! I will choose who is worthy or what cause is deemed relevant and pure to receive my donation.

Should this be raised at this time?
The First cannon of judicial ethics says:
A JUDGE SHALL UPHOLD THE INDEPENDENCE AND INTEGRITY OF THE JUDICIARY, SHALL PERFORM THE DUTIES OF THE OFFICE IMPARTIALLY, AND SHALL AVOID IMPROPRIETY AND THE APPEARANCE OF IMPROPRIETY IN ALL OF THE JUDGE’S ACTIVITIES .
RULE 1.01: PROMOTING CONFIDENCE IN THE JUDICIARY
A judge shall act at all times in a manner that promotes public confidence in the independence,* integrity,* and impartiality* of the judiciary.
I do not find any fault in the current nominee to the United States Supreme Court for being a woman, a Latino, for having made remarks on her qualifications as superior to the qualifications of any Caucasian. But I do find fault with her appointment violating the spirit of the first cannon of Judicial Ethics, that a judge should appear impartial. Litigants will be hesitant to turn to courts where the Justices appear stacked against them and this undermines the rule of law. Judge Sonia Sotomayor would become the sixth Roman Catholic justice on the Supreme Court. There are only nine of them, so that would mean that two thirds of the Justices, 66+%, would be Roman Catholic in a country where less that 25% of the population practices that religion. That religion predisposes its members, by life long training, faith, and in some cases, rule, to take certain positions that are likely to come up for hearing before the court. Any Appointee will not commit before they go onto the bench what position they may take in a case, but the appearance is there, however they may deny this will influence their rulings. The very appearance of six Roman Catholic Justices on the court gives the appearance to all litigants that if they appear on one side of those issues, be if choice, school prayer, school vouchers or other issues, they will not get a fair hearing. Of course, with the church’s and Popes stand on capital punishment, some might be inclined to support such a person in hopes of abolishing the death penalty. Only one Roman Catholic Justice on some of these issues has taken a position not supported by the church. I believe this is a far more important consideration than any other and should bar Judge Sotomayor from being confirmed by the Senate, no matter how good of a Judge she has been and how worthy of the position she may otherwise be. In fact, I believe it should have prompted her to decline the nomination at this time and should prompt her to withdraw. It is just not the appropriate time to appoint one more Roman Catholic to the court and preserve the diversity of the court in representing the religious views of this country. It appears to threaten the first amendment’s freedom of religion that is so much a bedrock of our society. I know these remarks are politically incorrect but feel they must be made. If you share these sentiments, please pass them on as I believe the general medial is wired not to touch this with a ten foot poll until finally forced to do so by the people.

As a practicing Roman Catholic, I can assure you that the appointment of Sotomayor to the S.C. will bring "nothing Catholic" to it. This is woman whose real belief system is based on anything that will get her ahead, just like the Kennedy's, Biden, Pelosi, etc. "John Q's" post is closer to the real concerns anyone should have. By the way, Scalia is really the only "practicing Catholic" on the current court while Thomas and occasionally Roberts are the only others with a consistent moral compass. It also amuses me how the seperation of church and state argument is always *** backwards. The Founding Founders concept was to keep government from interfering in the establishment of religion, not the other way around as most like to argue. But in Obama's world it matters not. She will be confirmed and this country will continue on its downward slide.

I'm not sure that Thomas' being a minister at one time is particularly relevant in some ways -- at least not unless the fact that (I'm 90% certain I've read) he sadly lost his faith in Christ while keeping it in socialism is also reported.
By most reports he was a decent man, but his "progressive" politics intertwined, unsurprisingly, with a loss of faith in the actual Kingdom of God.
Anonymoose, I'm 100% certain this is the internet, and it's pretty easy to cite your sources. If he did lose his faith, that's one thing, but you could come up with some actual proof other than "pretty sure I read this somewhere."
Not my pick, the Supreme Court is no place for an idealist.
2Timothy3:12-13 In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,13)while evil men and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.
Bob Jones,
You'll have a hard time explaining to folks about your supposed "Christ-like" qualities of Soviet Union, Red China, North korea, North Vietnam, Nazi Germany, Red Cuba, Chavez's Venezuala, and all the other unchecked leftist socialist/nationalist movements. The founding fathers of our country had it right..Stick with them..
Definitely not my pick for US Supreme court justice. She has already gone on record saying in effect impartiality is not part of her vocabulary. Just imagine what damage this self admitted "Latina" chicana can do to any issues surrounding illegal immigration. Obama is deliberately dismbmbering the United States of America with his choices. It will be most interesting to see how he deals with North Korea. I frankly don't hold out any hope for any miracles.
Your Name: " In fact when they find out their husband refers to himself as one, the realize they married an idiot." I needed a good laugh and that was "right on". Thank you. We live in the land of the free, therefore, I will give her a chance along with the rest of the American people when she becomes the next justice. We have the power of "one voice" for all of our leaders if we disagree with their decisions or actions. Again, thank you "Your name" for giving me a good laugh!
The advpcates of error are often themselves under deception,as those they impose upon. They are often sincere in their belief of error and are under a great delusion. If they are insincere they are equally deluded in supposing they can make error pass for truth before God.No one can deceive the searcher of hearts.
Why are you here if your "Latin" experience is so rich? Answer - You place of origin even with all the goodies "sucks" - you came to the USA where achievement is honored. You are still immature - you blame the US for all the shortcomings in the world while in reality it is people in your own place of origin - P.S. (there are really stingy - don't share anything - very predjudiced)( You have lots of company - our President for one - anyway you suck and please quit trying to turn the place that has given you everything into the place you came from - Capice?
It will be nice to have another fairminded liberal on the bench. You go girl!
Those who are in the act or process of deceiving are very unlikely to recover from their own error and are more susceptible to embrace the errors of others.
Are you really surprised Obama is replaceing one liberal with another?
We need to clone Reagan and Patton and let them loose.
Put a fork in us. The US is done. Republicans with their finger in the wind end up letting the Democrats define who they are. Both parties now walk down the same path together, just a few paces apart.
Let me see, she's anti white, anti gun, anti life, anti constitution, and wants to make law, not discern it, wow really great pick. By the way, she difinitely does not represent the latihn american people of this great country.
It is amazing to me how many people thinking themselves as Americans hate the value and economic systems that gave them there freedom and success. We are doomed...
Prayer should be brought back to our schools, public meetings, etc. We as a nation need God's blessings more now than ever before. Socialism will destroy our "Christian" country, and, we still are a "Christian" nation. Stand up and fight for our constitution. Call your senators, congressmen and local reps and voice your concerns.
What richness does a Latino woman have over a white male on the bench. What absolute garbage is that... sounds like the left socialist leanings of Obama's administration. Remember a country gets the goverment they deserve. OBAMA voters you have destroyed our country.
I didnt know that one race had a more rich character of witness than another. She scares me and DOES NOT represent the LATINO populace of the great country that so happens to be founded by hard working caucasians.
SOCIALISTS LOVING SOCIALISTS
Poor Waldeman... He's also fallen hook-line-and-sinker into the anti-American bought off liberal media crap... Or was it his brainwashing from his liberal idiot professors? This a good example of asleep at the switch Americans who don't give a damn about world events or HISTORY which is repeating itself. Hey Waldeman it wasn't 30 years ago when SOTOMAYOR made her speech at UC Berkeley aledging the supreme court can dictate and basically do what they want!
We are in serious trouble folks!!! We have a socialist, "Barry Sotelo" or who ever he is, who had a mentor "Frank" (as he describes in his book) that was a die hard Marxist. Barry who has friends that hate the country, have blown up police cars and has a pastor who spews racism against whitey, is dismantling the country right before our eyes! And now we will have a socialist, racist nomination for the supreme court!
We have mad-men testing us all over the world and the US sits on its hands. If you look at history, everyone was sitting on their hands when Hitler went crazy!! It's time to wake up America before it is too late!!!
Sorry Waldman... I meant to be responding to Gawker's update which I thought was part of your column. Please substitute his name for your's... Sorry again
has the white house revealed that she is a lesbian?
NO, that's not important either.
I guess even a narcissistic Princeton graduate of two Puerto Rican immigrants can reinvent the English language by placing commas before verbs. "The sum total of my life here, has been made-up of little parts from all of you." Heck, her sentence even throws a flag on the spell check of my MS Office showing me to get rid of it.
Does a person who likes some ideas, like being a champion of uthopic causes, immediately become the same as the one who first pronounced it?
I don't think so.
I see a lot of poisoned minds in here, blinded by this racist, frightened and extremely hypocritical society.
Just for curiosity. You would be surely surprised.
To Astonished:
FAIL. Streeeeeeeetching. If minor association qualifies someone, all republicans have been, going back to Reagan(who MET a socialist, FACE TO FACE!!!! OMGZZZ!!!)
Come up with something for real. Besides, Christianity is closer to socialism than our country is. "What you do unto the least of my brothers..." and many, many more.
Norman Thomas was a Princeton alumnus, Class of 1904, and thus perfectly natural to quote.
John Q is has hit the nail on its head. Bravo.

Ed:
Accidentally come here , I am incomparable to enjoy myself when i appreciate your beautiful article from my deep heart!
I think I will try to recommend this post to my friends and family, cuz it’s really helpful.
