So what if Norman Thomas was a socialist? Does everything that anyone who doesn't agree with you have to be dismissed without consideration? Is there something wrong with the idealism expressed in that quote?

David, "avowed Christian"? What? She's avowed no such thing. Reporters had to dig to find out she's Catholic, because she does nothing to identify herself in that way. She may well be Christian, but she certainly isn't "avowed". And as we well know, just because someone was raised Catholic doesn't mean that they're actually faithful Catholics.

Freelunch... what if she'd had an inspiring quote from, say, Trotsky? Or Mao? You quote people you admire, so picking Thomas is an insight to her thinking. And yes, it matters, because socialism is evil. It always results in assaults on the church. Wherever socialism is, there is also a drive to wipe faith from the Earth. This matters.

In New York City there was no stigma whatever against Norman Thomas. He is considered a hero here. There is even a Norman Thomas High School.

Norman Thomas was born November 20, 1884 in Marion, Ohio, the oldest of six children of a Presbyterian minister. Thomas had an uneventful midwestern childhood, helping to put himself through Marion High School as a paper carrier for Warren G. Harding's Marion Daily Star. Like other paper carriers, he reported directly to Florence Kling Harding. "No pennies ever escaped her," said Thomas. The summer after he graduated from high school his father accepted a pastorate at Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, which allowed Norman to attend Bucknell University. This pacifist stance led to his being shunned by many of his fellow alumni from Princeton, and opposed by some of the leadership of the Presbyterian Church in New York. When church funding of the American Parish's social programs was stopped, Thomas resigned his pastorate.[5] Despite this resignation of his position, Thomas did not formally leave the ministry until 1931, after his mother's death.[6]

I'm not sure that Thomas' being a minister at one time is particularly relevant in some ways -- at least not unless the fact that (I'm 90% certain I've read) he sadly lost his faith in Christ while keeping it in socialism is also reported.

By most reports he was a decent man, but his "progressive" politics intertwined, unsurprisingly, with a loss of faith in the actual Kingdom of God.

As Americans and Christians, one must remember the power we have--therefore, the "advocates of error" or "deception" will be seen by the good people of this nation. Have faith in our people to right wrong. For example, the President wanted to charge veterans who had health care cards and are disabled. To make a long story short, the President lost on that one by the huge voices of the veterans telling their leaders not to approve this action against veterans. Point being, don't be troubled by this nominee--who more than likely will be approved. Remember, we have the last "voice of decision" against wrong. Minor associations Please…..Sotomayor is a member of La Raza which means “the Race” minor associations…..Her racist comments if reversed would have gotten a white man stoned to death hung and then tarred and feathered. La Raza advocates the idea that the southwest should secede and go back to Mexico. They also believe that our Immigration laws should not be enforced. AH HA I thought a Judge was supposed to uphold the law. How can you be a member of a group that wants to circumvent it. It is only a minor association. Before you go off on that one….I support LEGAL IMMIGRATION! No one who follows the rules and lawfully enters this nation should be turned away. The law is the law and if it is violated we have the right and responsibility to enforce it. Not to just ignore it if we feel like it.

Barry O gave ACORN $800,000 listed at first for lighting and staging for an event later listed as get out the vote efforts. Lest we forget the NY Times killed a story that linked Obama’s camp to giving the group a list of all of his maxed out donors so they could then get money from them and funnel it back to his election efforts. They have admitted to killing the story but no one has questioned them on that really. ACORN is so corrupt its own board members are now calling for an investigation and no one will do it. Please do not besmirch God in a political discussion. If we lived by His laws we would not need the laws on the books now. The Ten Commandments pretty much cover it all if you actually have the intellect to apply and live by a code of morals but that is inconvenient and impedes my feel good and do what want lifestyle. The First cannon of judicial ethics says:

A JUDGE SHALL UPHOLD THE INDEPENDENCE AND INTEGRITY OF THE JUDICIARY, SHALL PERFORM THE DUTIES OF THE OFFICE IMPARTIALLY, AND SHALL AVOID IMPROPRIETY AND THE APPEARANCE OF IMPROPRIETY IN ALL OF THE JUDGE’S ACTIVITIES .
RULE 1.01: PROMOTING CONFIDENCE IN THE JUDICIARY
A judge shall act at all times in a manner that promotes public confidence in the independence,* integrity,* and impartiality* of the judiciary.

I do not find any fault in the current nominee to the United States Supreme Court for being a woman, a Latino, for having made remarks on her qualifications as superior to the qualifications of any Caucasian. But I do find fault with her appointment violating the spirit of the first cannon of Judicial Ethics, that a judge should appear impartial. Litigants will be hesitant to turn to courts where the Justices appear stacked against them and this undermines the rule of law. Judge Sonia Sotomayor would become the sixth Roman Catholic justice on the Supreme Court. There are only nine of them, so that would mean that two thirds of the Justices, 66+%, would be Roman Catholic in a country where less that 25% of the population practices that religion. That religion predisposes its members, by life long training, faith, and in some cases, rule, to take certain positions that are likely to come up for hearing before the court. Any Appointee will not commit before they go onto the bench what position they may take in a case, but the appearance is there, however they may deny this will influence their rulings. The very appearance of six Roman Catholic Justices on the court gives the appearance to all litigants that if they appear on one side of those issues, be if choice, school prayer, school vouchers or other issues, they will not get a fair hearing. Of course, with the church’s and Popes stand on capital punishment, some might be inclined to support such a person in hopes of abolishing the death penalty. Only one Roman Catholic Justice on some of these issues has taken a position not supported by the church. I believe this is a far more important consideration than any other and should bar Judge Sotomayor from being confirmed by the Senate, no matter how good of a Judge she has been and how worthy of the position she may otherwise be. In fact, I believe it should have prompted her to decline the nomination at this time and should prompt her to withdraw. It is just not the appropriate time to appoint one more Roman Catholic to the court and preserve the diversity of the court in representing the religious views of this country. It appears to threaten the first amendment’s freedom of religion that is so much a bedrock of our society. I know these remarks are politically incorrect but feel they must be made. If you share these sentiments, please pass them on as I believe the general medial is wired not to touch this with a ten foot poll until finally forced to do so by the people.
