Abortions for Gender Selection — The Latest Import?

posted by swaldman | 12:13pm Monday June 15, 2009

Chinese, Korean and Indian families in America appear to be using sex-selection techniques — including abortions based on gender — to maximize the odds of having boys, reports The New York Times:

In those families, if the first child was a girl, it was more likely that a second child would be a boy, according to recent studies of census data. If the first two children were girls, it was even more likely that a third child would be male.
Demographers say the statistical deviation among Asian-American families is significant, and they believe it reflects not only a preference for male children, but a growing tendency for these families to embrace sex-selection techniques, like in vitro fertilization and sperm sorting, or abortion….
Dr. Lisa Eng, a Hong Kong-born gynecologist who practices in Chinatown and Sunset Park, Brooklyn, said she tried to discourage couples who prefer boys from having abortions.
But, she said, “If it’s going to be a third, they’re pretty determined to have a boy. If it’s a boy, they keep it. If it’s a girl, they’ll abort.”

Good Bye
Today is my last day at Beliefnet (which I co-founded in 1999). The swirling emotions: sadness, relief, love, humility, pride, anxiety. But mostly deep, deep gratitude. How many people get to come up with an idea and have rich people invest money to make it a reality? How many people get to create

Secularizing the Cross (Christian Activists: Be Careful What You Wish For)
The Supreme Court heard oral arguments this week, in Buono v. Salazar, about whether a white 6 1/2 foot cross can be displayed in a national park as a tribute to World War I soldiers. Though it's depicted as a classic clash of the secular and the religious, it actually illustrates why Christian act

… the fruit of the knowledge of the tree of good and evil, is not very palatable…. the image of man as a serpent eating some gooey slime which is very disagreeable to him and choking him… these practices are disheartening…that there are those who would do these things and that there are those who would want it done…… but without God, all things are permissiable…

Leight,
Go back and read the account of Adams Temptation. 1)Adam was warned not to eat of the Fruit of the Tree. Who said it was goo and slime. What God mad was perfect. 2)Adam passed on the warning to Eve, you make no mention of her eating anything. 3)The serpant you refer to is speaking to Eve ,,, so far, we have a talking serpant, and Eve. At this point we have ‘the father of the lie’ speak, THE SERPANT questions Eve about what God has said, remember she heard it from Adam her husband/rib, Gods First Blood, if you will. So now we have the devil/satan/serpant talking to Eve, she speaks back to the devil/satan/serpant and THEN AFTERWARD she got good Adam to eat of the fruit. Gen 3:1,2,3,4,. In verse devil/satan/serpant is called the slickest of all the WILD BEASTS, not a bully. (devil/satan/serpant), is speaking Eve and then Adam is given the fruit by his lovely wife. Gen. 3:6, the last part of that verse clearly states IT WAS HER with her husband and ole sneaky snake was off at a distance laughing up a storm. Don’t make this any more than what it is, because at Gen 3:14-19, you read the sentencing phase and the remedy Jesus Christ!

It is unfortunate that folks can’t accept the child that is conceived. Do they realize that if they don’t have female children and just male children, who is going to give birth to future generations? The boys? Interesting that in 2009 females are still discriminated against…
