Songs I’m Embarrassed to Like

posted by swaldman | 2:16pm Monday July 20, 2009

john-denver.jpgThere are some songs I secretly play when I’m alone that I know would mark me as a) unsophisticated b) sappy and c) old.
But I love them nonetheless, perhaps because they entered my brain at an impressionable moment, perhaps because I have lousy taste but perhaps because the rest of the world hasn’t caught up with their awesomeness. Do you have songs like that?
Here’s my list. I’ve never before admitted my affection for these, so be gentle.

  • Rocky Mountain High by John Denver
  • Ring of Fire, version by Olivia Newton John
  • I’ll Always Love You, Dolly Parton version
  • Happy Together by the Turtles
  • Delta Dawn by Helen Reddy
  • The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia by Vicki Lawrence
  • You’re the One That I Want from Grease (Olivia Newton John and John Travolta)
  • Dark Lady by Cher
  • Anything by Renaissance

Olivia.jpgPretty embarrassing, eh?
Interestingly, there are some bands that would have been embarrassing, say, ten years ago but which are now kinda cool. Queen, Elton John and Billy Joel, for instance.
What are your “Songs I’m Embarrassed to Like”?

Good Bye
Today is my last day at Beliefnet (which I co-founded in 1999). The swirling emotions: sadness, relief, love, humility, pride, anxiety. But mostly deep, deep gratitude. How many people get to come up with an idea and have rich people invest money to make it a reality? How many people get to create

Secularizing the Cross (Christian Activists: Be Careful What You Wish For)
The Supreme Court heard oral arguments this week, in Buono v. Salazar, about whether a white 6 1/2 foot cross can be displayed in a national park as a tribute to World War I soldiers. Though it's depicted as a classic clash of the secular and the religious, it actually illustrates why Christian act

Annie’s Song – John Denver
Never Gonna Give You Up – Rick Astley
The Boss – Diana Ross
My Love – Petula Clark
Count Me In – Gary Lewis & the Playboys
And that’s just a starter list. Steven, I’m afraid that I could be even less sophisticated, sappier and older than you. :-)
