How we see ourselves and how we interact with the world around us has a lot to do with the energy that we are radiating out from ourselves. If we are constantly negative and constantly looking for the areas of perceived deficit in the world around us then that is what we naturally observe. If I wake up every morning and think about the sports car I don’t have, the mansion I don’t live in and the million dollars in the bank that isn’t there then of course this tints everything that I see. Alcoholics and those in drug recovery programs often have a very difficult time in understanding this concept and changing their thinking from what I can’t do anymore to all the things that are available for them to do that are positive and constructive.
“The Law of Sobriety”, the book I wrote specifically to help people in recovery use the process of seeking positives in their life, is based on a principle known as the Law of Attraction. This Law is evident everywhere that you look. The more that you believe something positive can and will happen in your life and the more you live your life that way and the more that it is likely to occur. Think of it as projecting your desires onto the world and having the world reflect them back to you in opportunities and events.
This all starts with creating a positive perspective about self. Envisioning yourself as a successful, sober and positive person creates positive energy within. This positive energy is then sent forward into the world around us as we live our life based on that positive vision. The more positive energy we radiate out the more positive energy will be returned to us. Being open to those opportunities is a true gift, but one that can only happen when negativity is out and positivity is in.

As you know I am a firm supporter in the use of positive energy in my life and in the life of the people I work with. My book “The Law of Sobriety” is based on the Law of Attraction and encourages people to learn to use the positive energy in the world around them to create the life and space that they want and desire. Having loving, positive, supportive relationships can only happen if the person in recovery is open to accepting these relationships in his or her life. And this is all based on truly being able to love yourself, get rid of negative, toxic relationships and open your heart to the truly great ones.
For individuals that have had problems with addiction in their lives accepting the fact that the universe wants to provide this positive relationships is often a mental hurdle that has to be crossed. Addicts may see themselves as deeply flawed, unworthy or undeserving of a wonderful, supportive and positive relationship. This is because they are still filled with emotional negativity and negative thoughts. Only by purging those negative emotions and energy can your heart and mind be opened for new and better options.
One way to encourage the positive emotion and energy of love into your life is through a pet. Dogs, cats and other pets that show affection and attention are a wonderful addition to your family. Your love and caring for your pet will make you feel good and you will experience more positive emotions because of the unconditional love to and from your pet. As you feel good about yourself in this relationship and open your heart up to feeling love and loved, the opportunities for more relationships on this positive level will present themselves in your life. Learning to love and be loved is the basis for a real change in the way we see the world around us and our pets can be a wonderful source of this love and positive energy.

When people talk about visualization strategies it is often in the framework of seeing yourself as you want to be when you are at your goal. This is certainly important as one part of the visualization process since if you don’t know where you are then you won’t know the steps you need to get to that destination. However, there are smaller steps to visualizing success that can help you make the right decisions every day of your life. Instead of just focusing in on the huge mega plan, you also need to spend time seeing yourself being successful in the details as well.
“The Law of Sobriety” is a book that I wrote because people often look only at the big picture and fail to see the little steps that they are taking to be successful in their recovery. When they don’t immediately get the big goal they become frustrated, feel unsuccessful and are more likely to slide back into the addiction. Focusing in on the little steps that you take every day and meeting those daily goals will help you stay motivate, stay actively involved in your recovery and in building up a sense of self-confidence and pride in your accomplishments.
To visualize the small steps you need to achieve to work towards the big picture goal do the following each morning:
Ask yourself what is the one thing that you want to achieve today. Make it something that is doable, achievable and based in a reality that can actually happen and be monitored.
See yourself as successful at this activity or achievement. You get up on time, you talk to one new person at work or you go to the gym instead of just going home.
Plan how you are going to achieve your vision. It may be setting two alarm clocks, writing a post it note to yourself or calling a friend and arranging to meet at the gym.
The more you see yourself doing these things, and these things are all supportive of your big goal, the more positive energy and opportunities you will find to continue to move forward.

“The Law of Sobriety”, my latest book, puts the importance of positive thinking front and center in recovery from alcohol and drug addiction. If you can’t see yourself as a sober person you will always see yourself as a person with an addiction. This is never a positive self-image. It is negative, harmful and highly counterproductive in your recovery efforts.
Seeing yourself as sober starts with envisioning your life without an addiction. Ask yourself:
- What do I look like as a sober person?
- What do I do as a sober person?
- What are my goals as a sober person?
- Who are my friends and supporters as a sober person?
By developing a self-concept of yourself as a sober, positive and successful person surrounding by supporting, caring individuals you literally create a mental reality that is positive and meaningful. This is far different than that negative image of the addicted you that you have harbored in your mind for years. Opening up your mind to the positive you allows options in your life that you simply couldn’t see before. You negativity and looking back was blocking the positive energy from the world around you literally trapping you in that dark, gloomy place.
I firmly believe that everything you need to be a sober, successful person is already in your world. All you need to be able to do is change your negative thinking and positive energy blocking to open up your heart and mind to what the universe is providing. This transformation is possible for anyone; but it isn’t easy work. Talk to an addiction counselor or therapist that uses the Law of Attraction and positive energy to make changes and you will be amazed at how wonderful the world will be to you.
