Beware the Overeducated, Loud, Brash White Man

posted by Tony Jones | 11:48pm Thursday December 18, 2008

Christianity Today, never a great fan of the emergent movement, seems to think that said movement is in need of revitalization, at least according to the subhead of their article on my exit as national coordinator of Emergent Village.  Final graf:

But Jones hopes decentralizing American emergent networks will give
participants worldwide, who lack access to book publishing and other
resources enjoyed by their American counterparts, more freedom to
express themselves. “Any time you can dethrone an overeducated, loud,
brash, white man,” he said, “people just feel more openness for their
own voice to be heard.”

My Blog Has Moved
Dear Readers, After a year with Beliefnet, I've decided to move to my own domain for my blogging.  It's been a fine year -- some things worked, other things didn't.  But in the end, I'll be a better blogger on my own.  My thanks to the Bnet editorial staff; they've been very supportive. Ple

Ending Christian Euphemisms: "Fundamentalist"
I've taken some heat in the comment section for using yesterday's post on "unbiblical" and a "higher view of scripture" as a thin foil for my own disregard of biblical standards. To the contrary, I was pointing to the use of the word unbiblical as a stand-in for a particularly thin hermeneutic. Ther

Why You Should Get GENERATE
Last week at Christianity21, GENERATE Magazine debuted. With the tag line, "an artifact of the emergence conversation," it fit perfectly at the gathering. When I actually got around to reading it last weekend, I was truly surprised at how good it is.There have been several efforts to begin a paper j

Here is my comment at CT on the article, which i gave a 2 start rating:
You said, “As one-time leaders of the emergent movement have recently distanced themselves from the term, the network itself dropped its organizational leader. The decision of Emergent Village’s board of directors to eliminate its national coordinator position marked the latest sign that the movement is either decentralizing or disintegrating.” You guys here at CT just don’t get it! Emergent Village still exists. It’s just not a corporate entity. Emergent emerges, grows, shifts, changes as do the times. It is not about power plays and top-down leadership models. EVERYONE has a voice. We are not in need of revitalization! Tall Skinny Kiwi is in the UK and there is still emerging church UK that is very much vital and alive! That is his context you are quoting. That’s the beauty about emergent – we can ebb and flow in different directions. Thank you for taking the time to report on this new adventure for the emerging church and Emergent Village USA.

I’m always amazed when people claim that being educated is a bad thing. I’d love to see one instance where anti-intellectualism has benefited Christianity, let alone anything else.
