I Guess I Needed More Time Off

I tried to jump back into the social media world this week, but I just couldn't muster up anything interesting to write.  Life has been busy: I spent the entire last week with my kids -- one of the greatest weeks of my life; JoPa is active -- we've signed our first contract with others in the works, and we've got two of our own events this fall; I've started a half-time job with a new media company; I'm editing the Didache book; and I've dived back in to work on my dissertation.

So, all in all, it's been busy.  I'll be back in full force on July 1, reporting from the Cornerstone Festival.

The Genesis of Gender Roles

This summer's conference for the Center for Biblical Equality will take place in St. Louis, July 24-26. And, scholarships are available for students.

This year's conference will address the formation of gender roles. Questions to be considered include: Are gender differences God-given, shaped by culture, or biologically determined? Do gender differences determine roles in church, home, or society? Are gender differences minimized by secular culture and how should Christians respond?

See the CBE website for more information.

PS: CBE's chief, Mimi Haddad, is a Voice at Christianity21.

Lying Fallow

I'm in the woods of Wisconsin this week, speaking at a church camp for high school students. Plus, I haven't got much to say.

So I'm gonna recharge my blogging batteries and dive back in next week.

Hope to see you then...

Death of Emergent Round-Up

Nick Fiedler: We didn't want Emergent to become the new club, but we wanted it to organize so that through gatherings, cohorts, and online social networks it could create it's own grouping and lovingly force some voices out into the...

So, You're Disappointed with Emergent...

Nick Fiedler is the latest to jump on the meme that emergent is fizzling, and he's disappointed. I am loathe to respond to posts like his. In fact, I rarely read them because I find them utterly depressing, and they...

Quote of the Day

It goes to Andrew Sullivan, who wrote of President Obama's Cairo speech,At its heart, the speech sprang, it seemed to me, a spiritual conviction that human differences, if openly acknowledged, need not remain crippling. It was a deeply Christian -...

This Is Why We Elected Him

I had the good fortune of watching President Obama's speech live from Cairo this morning, and it was masterful. There is and will be no dearth of commentary and analysis over the next few days, so I'll just say this:...

One Last Post on the Lectionary

More good comments under the second lectionary post (and here's the first). So here are my concluding thoughts (for now). When I began working as a pastor at Colonial Church in 1997, David Fisher had just introduced the Revised Common Lectionary...

More on the Lectionary

It may seem a parochial concern, but the comments on the Revised Common Lectionary post last week have been very intriguing. I've been pleasantly surprised by the comments of two members of the Consultation on Common Texts, especially. That's the...
