‘MONDAYS with TAIGU’ – about the verse of the kesa

posted by Jundo Cohen | 4:11am Monday October 19, 2009

When Dogen was in China, he heard this verse that we are all still chanting as we are about to put the Kesa on.

Vast is the robe of liberation

formless robe, field of happiness.

I wear the Tathagatha’s teaching

Liberating all sentient beings.

Dai sai ge dap pu ku,

Mu so fu ku den e

Hi bu nyo rai kyo

Ko do sho shu jo

(remember: recording ends soon after the beginning bells;
a sitting time of 20 to 35 minutes is recommended)

Thank you Sensei! A wonderful lesson today.
In sewing my hands were carefree and my mind moved all around. When i sat back in my chair, straightened up and loosen up my chest, shoulders and mind … carefree made perfect stitches!. When attempting perfect stitches it all went to pot :) (as did the “verses” i was repeating :X).
One more thing on being carefree the mistakes are no longer mistakes but just a reminder or another lesson. Of course now im reminded of the lesson again as some stitches let go, unravel and snag a bit and im now faced with some repair – “a stitch in time” – something something :) .

Many thanks for this teaching Taigu. My sewing and practice have faltered a bit of late, but I shall take both up again in the next moments I can…trying (but also not trying) to be carefree in both. Thank you for reminding me.
