New Archbishop

Aymond from Austin moving over. Going back home:

The Vatican for the first time in the city's history today appointed a New Orleans native to head the Catholic church here, naming Bishop Gregory Aymond of Austin, Texas the 14th archbishop of New Orleans.

He will replace Archbishop Alfred Hughes, who retires after seven of the most tumultuous years in the 216-year history of the New Orleans church.

Aymond, 59, grew up in Gentilly and spent his entire career in New Orleans until his departure for Texas nine years ago.

The Archdiocese of New Orleans said Aymond would take office after an installation Mass Aug. 20.

New Orleans needs a strong advocate for vocations. So many parishes have closed there. I am happy for the people in the Archdiocese of New Orleans.

Oh, wow, I'm in Austin too and am sad to learn this. And surprised, although I guess I shouldn't be. Oh, well, at least we had him for nine years.

I worked as Dir. of Adult Formation for 3 years in a parish in the Austin Diocese and witnessed a strong, solid bishop in Bishop Aymond. The Archdiocese of New Orleans is blessed.

I just hope that we get soon someone of the same caliber as Bp. Gregory's. His successor will have big sandals to fill.

All right you fellow Austinites: this is all the more of interest now that we know we're losing our dear bishop!

"In celebration of the Feast of Corpus Christi, benediction and Eucharistic adoration will be led by Bishop Gregory Aymond on June 14 at 6:30 pm at St. Mary’s. The service will be in English and Spanish. A reception will follow in Bishops Hall. Earlier in the afternoon, a procession with the Blessed Sacrament will begin at Cristo Rey Parish and travel to St. Mary Cathedral arriving there at 6:30 p.m."

Please post something here if you have any clue what time the procession is likely to START. I'm guessing that the tragedy that struck Cristo Rey a few months ago is the reason the procession will be starting there; but I'd love to know when to show up for it.
