A 62% Top Tax Rate?

posted by Donna Calvin

Media reports in recent weeks say that Senate Democrats are considering a 3% surtax on income over $1 million to raise federal revenues. This would come on top of the higher income tax rates that President Obama has already proposed through the cancellation of the Bush era tax-rate reductions.

If the Democrats’ millionaire surtax were to happen—and were added to other tax increases already enacted last year and other leading tax hike ideas on the table this year—this could leave the U.S. with a combined federal and state top tax rate on earnings of 62%. That’s more than double the highest federal marginal rate of 28% when President Reagan left office in 1989. Welcome back to the 1970s.

Here’s the math behind that depressing calculation. Today’s top federal income tax rate is 35%. Almost all Democrats in Washington want to repeal the Bush tax cuts on those who make more than $250,000 and phase out certain deductions, so the effective income tax rate would rise to about 41.5%. The 3% millionaire surtax raises that rate to 44.5%.

Congressman Warns: “Those Who Can, Should Move Their Families Out Of the City”

Be Prepared – There are Dangers Living in Urban Areas

If the Grid ever went down, what would you do?

WATCHWOMAN ALERT (or just my thoughts, I’m not sure which) –  I’m a city-gal; in fact, I don’t like living in the country.  I did for a short time and I didn’t like it at all.  However, I sat down at my computer and I went to the Drudge Report and read the alarming headlines I’ve copied and pasted herein.  A little while later I saw Item #2 in my inbox about what Congressman Bartlett is warning us about.  I’m posting both herein for your information only.  I am not trying to panic anyone.  Nor am I endorsing any one’s products or what you should do to be prepared, but it is something I think we all need to think about.  I want to assure you I have no financial connection to the people who produced the on-line movie and I have never purchased one product from them.  I don’t know anything about them, but there are some interesting ideas they preview in the on-line movie.  I am not a survivalist and I would likely be in a terrible position if anything really awful happened, but I’m not so sure this is the best position to be in.  Our power went off for 3 or 4 days several years ago and it was a horrible time!  Fortunately, some of my family members didn’t lose their power so they took every thing from my refrigerator; otherwise, I’d have lost every bit of food we had on hand.  I am not one of the prepared for a catastrophic event persons, or even a-not-so-catastrophic prepared person, but I’m thinking maybe I should be. I’ve always been a “Que Sera, Sera” kind of person.  Maybe that’s not such a good idea, aye?  What about you?  What are your thoughts?  ▬  Donna Calvin

Congressman Warns: “Those Who Can, Should Move Their Families Out Of the City”

There are a whole host of events that can bring the world as we know it today to its knees. From a hyperinflationary economic collapse to an electro magnetic pulse originating from the sun or a nuclear weapon , there exists a real and present danger that our system may, in the near future, experience unrecoverable shocks to the power grid and clean water infrastructure, a halt to just-in-time agricultural transportation systems and a collapse of the currency exchange mechanisms that make the economy function.

US Representative Roscoe Bartlett (R-MD), lived through the great depression, so he’s seen how bad things can get. In a new documentary, Mr. Bartlett and others discuss the dangers posed to those living in cities and ways that your family can survive if the worst were to ever happen.

Roscoe Bartlett:

We could have events in the future where the power grid will go down and it’s not, in any reasonable time, coming back up. For instance, if when the power grid went down some of our large transformers were destroyed, damaged beyond use, we don’t make any of those in this country. They’re made overseas and you order one and 18 months to two years later they will deliver it. Our power grid is very vulnerable. It’s very much on edge. Our military knows that.

There are a number of events that could create a situation in the cities where civil unrest would be a very high probability. And, I think that those who can, and those who understand, need to take advantage of the opportunity when these winds of strife are not blowing to move their families out of the city.

We realize that for most people this may be decried as fear-mongering and crazy survival talk. We can’t help but point out, however, that it’s not just Representative Roscoe Bartlett, economist Marc Faber, and trend forecaster Gerald Celente that are recommending you prepare and head for rural areas. The US Pentagon and Military are very much aware of these possibilities and they’re preparing for exactly the scenarios described in this documentary.

The threat is out there, and just because it hasn’t happened in our modern-day society up until now doesn’t mean it won’t happen in the future. In fact, it has happened through history – strife, poverty, depression, economic collapse, war. You name it and somebody in history has lived it. The government spends hundreds of billions of dollars on emergency preparedness, disaster planning, continuity of government and war gaming these scenarios. There’s a reason for that. We recommend our readers take a queue from them and others who are warning of these outlier possibilities.

Mislabeling kids as ADHD for Social Security Benefits?

Mislabeling kids as ADHD? Investigate federal rules

May 29, 2011
GOOD INTENTIONS have gone awry in the federal program that gives cash benefits to families of disabled children, and a comprehensive assessment of the program’s weaknesses is the first step toward fixing it. Given the strong possibility that children are being misclassified as disabled to make their families eligible for checks of up to $700 a month, Congress should happily pay the $10 million or so needed to fund a study of the program by the well-regarded Institute of Medicine. And then it should quickly implement any changes based on the institute’s findings before more children are misclassified.

As the Globe’s Patricia Wen documented in a series in December, the $10 billion-a-year Supplemental Security Income program, which was originally meant for families of children with such disabilities as Down syndrome or cerebral palsy, has long since expanded to cover such mental conditions as attention-deficit disorder. In 1990, 8 percent of the poor children on SSI had qualified because of mental, learning, or behavioral disorders; in 2009, more than half did.
To some degree, the change reflects an acknowledgment that certain mental disabilities can strain a family just as physical ones do. But it also suggests that, in an era of stagnant wages and dead-end jobs, many poor families are looking to SSI less to defray expenses associated with a child’s disability than to help make ends meet more generally.
