I wonder if the American Prayer is really just a call to move from fear to love. I don’t think any of us can deny that God’s will for us is to live in love. What if we just make that our focus? America is ripe for a new energy. Could this time in history be our greatest opportunity to raise our collective consciousness about what we are choosing and try a different energy, a new force that will create unified solutions that last and give us the dreams we all seek: life, liberty and the pursuit of real happiness. A dream that is based in fear will eventually collapse (looks that way now!) One that is based in love will flourish beyond our imagination.
What the world needs now is LOVE, the only thing that can truly create peace and prosperity for all. We can create a country that motivates people not through competition, but through cooperation, caring and compassion. Love is the essence of the spiritual path and asks us to live consciously from the heart. We talk about love, but do we truly know how to embody it? I don't think Obama is our savior, but rather an inspirer for all of us to change course.

Well stated on prayer, Lisa. It is a communication with God, but reverence about what His Will. It is a good thing to unite in thoughts about our nation's leaders and hopefuls. They are looking out the top and we do look up to them for guidance. Wonder who our leaders look to? That is probably what bothers most folks. Thanks, Nancy Roberts.
I think this concern is overblown. I just re-watched the video and I do not see any G-d symbolism in it that refers to Obama. If anything, the comparison is not to a deity, but to Martin Luther King.
I have to say, it's been so long since there was such inspiration and enthusiasm that has been mustered for a candidate so we tend to forget what that looks like and instead mistake it for something else.
There's a lot of crazy extremists posting hateful things on the internet about Obama as the "anti-Christ" and I think this concern that people view him as G-d only adds fuel to that fire. If anything, he's been a humble, grateful candidate, and has not promoted anything like a cult of personality about himself. The adoration comes from the ground up. And in our cynical age, it's hard to recognize when that's occurring.
Don't you get it? There are people who think Obama is a savior and are fanatical with it. One he is just a man. Two everyone seems to forget this man's associations and background. He was born out of dirty Chicago politics. Studied for 20yrs. how to mentally and rhetorically manipulate a crowd by Reverend Wright. Wright teaches hate against Jews and Whites. Obama supports not just Muslim, but radical Muslims. Odinga in Kenya, who burns men women and children in the churches and wants Sharie law. You are being seduced. Obama has an ulterior motive. You cannot sit in s church that preaches hatred and then pretend to love all. His books talks of hate, suspicion and his own prejudice against whites. Reverend Wright thinks Luis Farrakhan is an outstanding leader. Farrakhan believes all whites are from the devil and that only blacks are the chosen race of Allah.
The New Nation of Islam in Chicago,IL led by Farrakhan has been created (10/17/08) as Obama is poised to take the White House. This is no coincidence. I am a friend and I am telling you Israel will come under attack through Obama. He will poison countries through politics. He will try to destroy all America is and replace it with a blind, deaf and dumb nation. All who oppose him will be hounded and silenced. It has already begun.
This is an election, and as in religion, people are prayerful, and mindful of wishes for those prayers to be answered. The implication is that there is a hope that Obama is an G-d's answer to those prayers. Muddying the water with suggestions of insidious Muslim plots is fear mongering of the basest sort. Implying the deification of Obama is also politically motivated. I will vote for Obama because I believe he will represent all Americans... and I believe that he will also work for peace in the Middle East that will support Israel. Those of us in the US should be voting our consciences, mindful of the real issues, and without pandering to the fearmongers among us.
Having watched closely presidential candidates and campaigns since the Truman/Dewey contest in 1948, I have never seen any political phenomenon as frightening as the almost tribal, quasi-religious fanaticism which marks too many supporters of Sen. Barack Obama.
Extreme fundamentalists of the far right who are often criticized for their excesses -- and many times properly so -- but they pale in comparison to this trance-like devotion of these new "holy rollers."
I know Barack is not God. Yet I lived long enough to understand when some loves humanity. Yet, can fully please everyone, yet desire to do the best that all be well.
Only Jews can be G-d? the article by the Rebbe is as dumb as most of the posts
In my job as essay coach, I have discovered that none of the students and grad students who use my services read anything difficult for pleasure. In fact, even the ones who read popular fiction only read a book or two a year. Tutors for the S.A.T. often insist that students read "The Atlantic Monthly" or "The Economist" in order to learn to grapple with ideas and dense prose.
A computer program I read about analyzes speeches, and it seems that Obama has been addressing the crowds in llth grade-level English, and McCain has been using 9th-grade. Also, Obama speaks a few more words in, say, a minute than McCain does.
I do not believe in either candidate. However, I hope that Obama's higher level of discourse directed at the public will pay the dividend of more general interest in books and ideas. Students going to college right now are incapable of reading a writing prompt on a college application and responding to it, because they cannot pay attention long enough to absorb what is being asked exactly. I can say for sure that in almost every student there is a real dislike of thinking outside the classroom. Some populist thug will profit from this new American one of these days. I do not believe it will be Obama, but his approach to the young and those unable to sit still long enough to contemplate something has been opportunistic, and the next candidates will have learned all the new ways to campaign.
Farrakhan announced that Obama is the Messiah, and he (Farrakhan) is Elijah mentioned in the bible.
Quoting Farrakhan. "Jesus was not born in Bethlehem, Jesus was born in Georgia (Farrakhan's home town).
Jesus in the bible was only a forerunner for the present day Jesus". People are not listening.
Everything coming out of Obama's mouth comes straight out of the Communist Manifesto, written in 1889 by Carl Marx. Obama is an anti-christ, the forerunner for the real Anti-Christ. Jesus said, there would be many claiming to be the Messiah. Jesus warned, "Do not believe them." When Jesus returns, every eye will see Him. Men will cry out for the mountains to hide them for they refused to repent, now they must face the real Messiah. People better wake up. Obama is an anti-christ. He is seeking a one world ruler. He will destroy this nation. May God have mercy on America.

Jon,
I don't know how old you are, but please, no one is going to listen to you until you learn to write correctly spelled and grammatical English. Texting is not a universal language. You will not get a job or get elected to anything if that is the best you can do. Texting is to written language what Ebonics is to spoken American English.
But, to the point. I know of no attempt by "Hollywood lefties" or any other group, to make Obama into a messiah. Rabbi Hirshfield, you are preaching to a diminishing audience. You are only encouraging the Bush republican strategists that know that fear is the only way to pull the wool over the eyes of uneducated and ignorant. For the third straight time.
I hope it doesn't come to that.
Listening, looking, at this inspiring video, I observed that Obama's eyes were [mostly] looking up, as if for guidance from YHWH, and that speaks volumes to me. Blessings, SpiritSpark
I watched the video and I see it as a request for prayer, that the current oppressive administration in office get booted out, and a much better administration be elected in. Obama very well could be the answer to that prayer, although the damage the Bush administration has caused may not be reparable, which is in a since a good thing, because it means the return of the Messiah is very near. I personally don't believe the Messiah will return until the new Age comes in, around 2100, but others say 2012, and others say 2060, so who knows, God does. But that doesn't mean I don't pray for God's Kingdom to come, I pray every day, "Thy kingdom come" No I don't see the video as them praying to Obama, but for a request to God of an end of the oppression felt from the Bush administration, and there are only two choices, given we assume the Kingdom of God is far off in the future. Perhaps Obama will be similar to the Maccabees. I also see it as an attempt to keep things somewhat general as to whom the prayer is too, so as not to offend any one particular religious group. Christian's Pray to God the Father, through a mediator and high priest Jesus Christ, the Jews pray directly to G-d, as do the Muslims. So I believe the video attempts to preserve the freedom of religion in America. What will be fun to watch is the GOP gnashing teeth when Obama taxes the oil right out of em and uses that money to actually educate and help the ones the GOP have oppressed. Moreover, I do hope and pray that the dependence on oil is so far removed that Texas and Alaska become mere tourist sites. It is my opinion that Obama (God willing) will be to the office of commander-in-chief, as Tiger Woods is to the the game of golf, the best we will see for years to come. So it is going to go from the worst we have ever seen (yes the Bush Administration) to the best we have ever seen (at least in our lifetime). Regarding the will of God, it is my understanding of scripture that the will (plan) of God is always unfolding, even if someone thinks they are going against it, and in the end it always turns good for those who obey God even in trial and very bad for those who disobey. God puts us through trials and difficult times, to refine us, as he did to Job, Joseph, and his brothers, Moses, Davie, and as he did to Israel throughout the Old Testament (I hope you are not offended by my saying Old Testament), and as he did to his Son, Jesus Christ, and as he does to the Body of Christ, that is Christians. If Christians are not suffering for Christ sake, it is highly likely they are not truly part of the Body of Christ. After a short time of suffering, God generally makes those who are refined by that suffering, that is disciplined, the apple of his Eye, as he did to Job, and as he did to King David, and others throughout the Old Testament. But I'll agree with you Brad Hirschfield, that it is disturbing that some think they know God's will, that is the same as saying they themselves are God and judge. Brad, this is the attitude of many Christians today, especially the ones who embrace the "Once Saved Always Saved" (OSAS) doctrine. It is not at all a teaching in Scripture, but one can imagine the implications it might lead to, regarding one's behavior, and those implications all manifest themselves, as we see with the current administration. George W Bush believes he has a free ticket into the Kingdom of Heaven, therefore he can be as evil as he wants now on the earth, or as good as he wants now on the earth, but his belief is that his works mean nothing, he goes to heaven. So if that one's behavior/deeds matters not, what's the point in being pious? And if that one's fleshly desires present a path of least resistance, what path will that one take? But Jesus command us to take up our own cross and follow him, and Jesus said that if we love him, for us Christians to obey his commandments (see Mat 5,6,7). By the way, it requires faith to obey Christ, because they are works of faith. Now I don't disagree that Scriptures teach that some are created for an evil purpose, and some for a good purpose, but that knowledge does not give anyone the power to know his own future. Only the creator knows the future he has laid out for each of us (See James 4:13-17, John 3:27, Mat 26:24) and unless he tells us what's next, we can't know. Even Paul didn't know his future Judgment (See 1 Cor 4:4). With that in mind the fear of God begins to germinate. So, we have what I consider an imaginary free will, and it is of utmost importance for us to put that imaginary free will to learning what God want's of us, and to live it. Many OSAS believing Christians love to quote John 3:16, but they fail to read down to John 3:20, and if they do read down to it, they almost always twist it to mean something in line with their OSAS doctrine.
Well that "prayer" video certainly is a reminder to be careful, very careful of what you pray for.
Dear Helen Allen;
Whoa. Hold on everybody. Is it really that serious?
It's just an election. Maybe I could put this in a little better perspective by putting this on the table up front.
I’m an American, 45yrs old and coincidentally I'm black (Not African American...never been to Africa, probably will never go.)
I am shocked and appalled at what people have come up with as excuses to not vote for Obama.
I’ve heard that, Obama
-"if he wins will take away the white vote."
-"his brother is a known terrorist"
-"he and his wife are anti-white"
Is this Country in such bad shape that it's inhabitants are willing to forfeit their social security, privatize their Medicare and Medicaid so that they can sleep better at night knowing they slandered a man because of the color of his skin?
Let’s look at it this way...my mother is 78 years old this month and not one president in her lifetime has ever had skin like hers. If McCain wins should she be afraid? At this rate maybe so.
Wow, antichrist..really? That's pretty strong stuff.
Look, I'll say this again I AM BLACK and if Ronald Wilson Reagan (six letters in three names =666) didn't scare you, so far we've all lived through the second coming of Bush and apparently you've not been even offended by that, I'm sure that one “Negro” in your life won't kill you.
Once again it's not that serious and if it'll make you feel any better
just remember that Obama is only half black...Vote for the "good" half.
just checking...
barack hussein obama does not scare me. the color of the candidates skin doesn't affect me either. if the candidate were polka dotted, i wouldn't care. i would ask that polka dotted candidate to be proud of the United States, salute our flag, not befriend terrorist at anytime, put God back into this country.
my mother is 70 and she too has never seen a black president and i would HATE to think that obama will be the first and he cannot even salute our flag....good Lord.
Use The Brain God Gave You.
All that has been .and is happening is fullfillment of The Bible.
Any thing contrary to The Bible is anti-christ not necessarily THE
ANTICHRIST.I believe is is sacraligious to pray to any man but the question is? Is Obama or any other person pure in the intent of their platform, such as killing babies in abortion. That life is sacred and not for mankind to mess with. Will we sacrifice our morals for some promises that can't even be kept and choose a man who lies and hides truth. Is he an AMERICAN from birth? Is Oprah behind him in illigal ways? Let us think and pray to God Almighty.
barack hussein obama is not a truthful man. He is a friend of ayers, rev wright, farrakan, fleighter, and a plo, sympathizer. Hussein is a extreme radical socialist. I still believe he is a Muslim. I feel sorry for our country if he becomes president. The black people will vote for because of color only.It is a shame.
For what it is worth, voting for anyone because of skin color, gender, religious believe and sexual orientation is illegal just like chosing to hire on these things is. If a person votes for Barack because he is black, is it any worse than voting for McCain because he is white, or for McCain because Palin is female? Come on people, take the next few days to look at how these people have voted in the past. It will tell you where their priorities are. Is Barack a liar or a politician? Is he a muslim radical because his father was muslim (and not a radical)? Is McCain more American and not capable of telling a lie because he is white? All politicians make promises they can't keep, and they all distort the truth. It is part of the way things are. Even our greatest presidents made promises they did not keep and if the truth be known even lied. Lets not attach harmful labels to any of the candidates. Black or white, male or female the Lord God made them ALL.
I tremble for my beloved country when I see the stubborn ignorance of bigoted people who think they have a right to define another person's reality for them. Senator Obama has consistently maintained a balanced, calm demeanor in the midst of libelous charges being hurled at him. Meanwhile, Senator McCain continues to demonstrate the demeanor that is dangerous that close to the nuclear trigger.
If you dare to consider his performance in office once he's there, we'll see what you think in a few years.
Rabbi:
I hate to say it, but you need to see and hear it again. It is so obvious that it is about completing Martin Luther King's dream.
It is beautiful and moving, but nothing about praying to or whorshipping any man. By bring up this type of point you have just brought out many of the bigots as you can see by some of the comments.
It is a beautiful and emotional song that touched my heart. As an older white woman that encountered some discrimination in the workplace, I know what I experienced was no where close to what black people have endured. I was an Obama supporter from the beginning, having the first woman was not the least bit important, which is probably a reflection of no longer seeing discrimination in the workplace.
I can totally understand a black person wanting Obama to win because substantial discrimination still exist, which is evident in all the people that will not vote for Obama because he is blacks. As the song says, "This is the time to finish what you started." It is very overstated to say African-Americans are voting for Obama because of the color of his skin. Do you see a pattern in the voting history of African-Americans?
1932 Roosevelt 71%
1948 Truman 77%
1960 Kennedy 68%
1964 Lyndon Johnson 94%
1984 Walter Mondale 90% Ronald Reagan 9%
1988 Michael Dukakis 90% George H.W. Bush 10%
1992 Bill Clinton 83% George H.W. Bush 10%
1996 Bill Clinton 84% Bob Dole 12%
2000 Al Gore 90% George W. Bush 9%
2004 88% Kerry
As a few others have said, it is about completing Martin Luther King's dream. It is hope for a better American for everyone by helping the "least of these." The foreclosure sign and Obama painting the side of someone's house.
It includes part of Dr. King's speech the night before he was assassinated.
King says:
"Well, I don't know what will happen now. We've got some difficult days ahead. But it doesn't matter with me now. Because I've been to the mountaintop. And I don't mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will. And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over. And I've seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people will get to the promised land. And I'm happy, tonight. I'm not worried about anything. I'm not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord."
I like the lyric, "And what you see depends on where you stand" To me it speaks volumes about the hate and racist statements about Obama. I have noticed that the people posting hate and false statements about Obama never include the reason to vote for McCain, except the false allusions that McCain will end abortions or the false statements about Obama's tax plan.
Here are the lyrics:
This is my American Prayer
This is my American Prayer
This is the time to finish what you started
And this is no time to dream
This is the room
We can turn off the dark tonight
Maybe then we might see
American Prayer
American Prayer
And this is the ground
That keeps our feet from getting wet
And this is the sky over our head
And what you see depends on where you stand
And how you jump will tell you where you're gonna land
American Prayer
American Prayer
My oh my
Couldn't get much higher
Lets not kick out the darkness
Make the lights brighter
And these are the hands
What are we gonna build with them?
This is the church you can't see
Give me your tired, your poor and huddled masses
You know they're yearning to breathe free
This is my American Prayer
American Prayer
American Prayer
When you get to the top of the mountain
Will you tell me what you see
If you get to the top of the mountain
Remember me
I'm not seeing it. The song and video may be kind of treacly -- it's a little over the top -- but damn right people are praying to see Obama get elected.
I have just returned from Israel and everywhere we went we were asked how we were voting I replied McCain and received hugges and thank you, whereas other with me stated Obama and their respond was silence. Why would Israel care? Obama stated that when elected he would not support Israel and the people in the occupied areas are for Obama. I am not saying that anyone candidate is better then the other and America needs their leadership. What I am saying is that in the world that we live in, you need your friends to watch your back and we need to watch Israel and its a blessing to have Israel to watch ours. Many years ago their was a nation that had someone with charisma, and talked of unity of a people but it cost the lives of our families, so I tend to stay away, and pray that history will not repeat itself. My prayer at the Wall was that Messiah would come and true Shalom would be ours. As we vote we will need to vote our heart and no one can do that but each one of us and pray that what we choose will not come back to bite us. Personally I have heared the speaches but I can not vote for anyone with a Muslim name and family connection. Blood is thicker than ones country unless your Jewish and they are the same.
As far as I am concerned any candidate that does not embrace the Christian heritage that this nation was founded on is not a suitable candidate for the office of President. Also, we will be putting ourselves in an position of being a forsaken nation if we do not stand with Israel, God's chosen people. All one has to do is study their Bible and see how many prophecies have already come to pass with more to be fulfilled. It is really sad that people jump to the wrong solution without investigating thoroughly. The American people are a spoiled people and will pay for their blind, selfish, greedy, earthly ways. Our ways may be right in our eyes but they certainly are not right in God's eyes.
It is our God given ability, and duty to protect Israel. Our people and leaders throughout recent history have given the Jewish people and their God given land our help in keeping the Holy land and the Jewish people safe.
It is blasphemy to hold Obama to this height and superior status. What has Obama done to earn this type status? We all go to Church, what makes him so much more filled with the spirit? Has God written this? If so I have missed it. Someone please tell me what he has done to have millions of people look upon him as though he is the savouir to
I am truly sickened when I look back through history and see the shameful ways in which human beings have been treated, not just one group, but many groups of people all over the world and it is still going on.
I cannot sit by though and hear that Obama is going to fix all of the wrongs that have been made. We vote to have the best candidate in the White House to help solve the domestic and world issues. To vote because he is white, black, Christian, or Muslim is wrong, please listen. This is the most important election in my life time and some say in our history.
Just please pray to God and listen! Listen long! Pick up you Bible and read What Jesus told us and asked of us. Please read Revelations and see if anything strikes your nerves. If anything is familiar
I pray goodwill to all of you reading this. I believe in God and what is written. We need to read forward quickly in the Bible so we can all not read into Gods words, but just read Gods word sand let the spirit take you where God is willing.
I cannot understand how the comments for Obama can mention all of the hatred and people he associated himself with, and then people just say he is the fresh air, the new energy.
I am truly sickened by the fact that Obama will not in good conscience Salute our soldiers and Salute our flag and what it truly stands for. I pray for God to help our Country fight against terrorism and help protect Israel. It is our duty that we protect and keep Israel from harm, that is the responsibility of what God has given us.
I hope everyone sits in contemplation and really reads the bible, especially Revelations. It spells out a very real scenario that is playing out. Please read and than pray. Listen, don't speak, just listen until the holy spirit speaks to you. This is a very important time in our history. We have to make sense of why we vote for the candidate of choice. Please read and listen!
I pray for all of you out there. Christ told us to Love our neighbors, but he also showed and wrote about the end. I am not afraid of what will come in the future, it worries me but I will Martyr for God if Obama turns this country into a hate country we have to seek God and pay the consequences to our leaders who may change our whole country.
I am not a fanatic, I just know and you should also know that God asks us to die for him against the enemy, whomever that may be.
After this election and 4 years from now I hope we can still say God Bless America and that it still remains on our money and coins. That is the way this country was formed. I hope the Ten Commandments are still welcomed in our public areas. pray that America will still be a place we can all worship and we are not told how to believe.
God Bless you all! Please do the right thing when it comes time. Educate yourselves and please don't get caught up in a river of others emotions.
The newly formed members of the Obama Cult either do not have the genetic ability to reason critically or that ability has been actively suppressed by parents and the education system. We have proof enough that this is true.
George Orwell's book, '1984', is required reading for most American high school and college students. The book is a condemnation of collective thinking and intellectual suppression. It is a horrifying vision of a society in which individualism is dead. But the Obamanoids can obviously read '1984' and not recognize their ideology and themselves in it.
Is political correctness not a subtle form of thought control? Do the speech police of the left not demand their own form of 'Newspeak'? They obviously believe, contrary to all historical evidence, that a more tyrannical government will ensure greater liberty. Less freedom is more freedom. Weakness creates security. Taxation creates prosperity. Regulation creates efficiency. Limited speech is more free that unlimited free speech.
The left is already living in a self-created '1984' world, and is too blind to see it.
LET TRUTH REIGN IN YOUR CONSCIENCE. It is very evident that no one is praying to Barack Obama, but all God Loving people should pray for the Safety of this man, and rightfully so....For the prejudice in this country runs deep and wide and is voiced in many unenlightened circles. So sad so very sad that the primitive mindset is alive and well and takes cowardly refuge under the cloak of some fundamentalist "Christian" churches. Well did LORD JESUS CHRIST say... "many shall say Lord.. Lord have we not prophesied IN THY NAME.... and I will profess unto them I never knew you depart from me you that work iniquity"
And another thing to consider: Why is spreading the wealth so fearful for many who claim they are Christians??? This is a core argument for "Joe the Plumbers" by the McCain campaign and I hear this fear from "Christian" shows like Hal Lindseys. In fact this is what Jesus says: "Depart from me you who are cursed into the eternal flame....for I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me....whatever you did not do for the least of these you did not do for me." I think our Lord Jesus has the final authoritative word on spreading the wealth over anyone including McCain and his supporters.
May the true servant of God win this election and be His instrument to deliver us out of the Deceptions of Satan. AMEN
They should have called the song "This is my pagan prayer" featuring Obama as their "savior", lol...Like these people in that video are so "holy" and "godly" because they say "prayer"...Everyone of these people in that video are ungodly sinners. There is nothing honorable in lifting a mere sinful man to the stature of a god...Obama's gonna bring change alright...but not the kind of change that many have been duped into believing...God have mercy on us all...Come Lord Jesus come!
I will not follow any leader who so faithfully supports abortion.
Also, I believe my God to be pro-life.
Can you please point out an occasion where Obama has refuted the Messiah label.
With the growing hatred for President Obama's economic and social policies my prayer focus has expanded from praying against his murderous social agenda regarding the unborn to now praying for this Countries' hard working Americans to not completely lose it against Barack Obama- the man.
If you are reading this President Obama please understand that the course you are sending America in has only one end. Destruction.
May God reach your mind in time Sir.
