A man, armed with a rifle, entered the United States Holocaust Museum today at 1 p.m. and shot at least one person before he was shot by a museum gaurd. The AP story about the museum shooting has little other detail, but one does have to wonder about the quality of security which allowed an idividual, armed with a long-barelled weapon to boot, to gain access to the the museum....

Seems too early to point fingers, so I'll reserve judgment on security efforts. But, guards did immediately confront the man as he walked in. That's when he opened fire hitting the guard. The guard then shot the suspect.
What I want to know is how does a man with a rifle walk through DC with a long rifle and nobody spots/tries to stop him? I've never been there. Can somebody fill me in?
A couple of summers ago we visited the Holocaust Museum and went through that security entrance. It was, by far, the most thorough security entrance of any of the buildings we visited. Even though it was July 4th, we still got the full gamut.
If I read the story correctly it was at this security checkpoint that the guards confronted the shooter. If so, the security worked exactly as planned.
As for how someone could get away with walking around with a rifle in that area? Well, we've been told for years by conservatives that people carrying guns in public is supposed to be how we keep things like this from happening.
I guess folks around the Museum today believed that.
