Friday's 5 Faves: Natural Products in My Bathroom Cabinet

Some of you have told me that you really like "Friday's 5 Faves" which I haven't done in awhile, so here goes: Natural Products in My Bathroom Cabinet.

coco152.jpg
1. Coconut oil/coconut butter (it's liquid when it's warm, i.e., oil, and solid when it's cooler, i.e., butter). I use it for makeup remover (eye makeup, too), moisturizer for face and body (it really, really works), deep conditioner for hair, lip balm, cuticle oil, bath oil. It is truly amazing stuff. You can get it at a health food store or order online (Nutiva is the brand I buy); it's so reasonably priced for all it does, it frees up cash for some of pricier items below.

2. Dr. Hauschka deodorant. I stopped using antiperspirant because of its aluminum content,
eco-dent.jpg
and Dr. Hauschka's super-natural deodorant takes up the slack. Like all Dr. Hauschaka products (with the exception of sunscreen which by law has to be in a nonbreakable container), it's even packaged in glass. Find it online or at natural food stores and upscale pharmacies.

3. Ahava Mud Exfoliator. This comes from the Dead Sea and does a fine job of facial exfoliation without irritating my sensitive skin. In addition to ordering online, you can find Ahava at select natural food stores. Today there was even a selection of Ahava products, including Mud Exfoliator, at Marshall's -- a total treat, discounted, right there in the checkout line.

4. Aubrey Organics Green Tea & Ginkgo Moisturizer SPF 15. This is my standard daytime moisturizer and sun protector, totally natural ingredients -- it even looks green when you put it on. I can almost feel my skin drink it up, and makeup goes on beautifully over it. At natural food stores and online.

5. Eco-Dent tooth powders. Once you try these, it's hard to go back to paste. I use "Daily Care" in a luscious cinnamon flavor most of the time, and ExtraBrite for Whitening for a couple of weeks two or three times a year. At natural food stores and online.

30 days to a charmed life Day 26: clean up your diet

rizwan ali awan.jpgYour body is the receiving station for every impulse of your life. The food you eat determines, in large part, the frequency at which you're vibrating. Remember the old computer phrase, "Garbage in, garbage out"? For bodies, it's "Garbage in, garbage attracted."

There are a lot of opinions and philosophies on food and nutrition, but here's a basic foundation:

1. Eat greens. Eat greens like crazy, the darker the better. Romaine, leaf lettuce, broccoli, chard, kale, mustard greens, turnip greens, arugula, parsley, cillantro, spinach, Mesclun greens. If it's green, it'll help you. Eat tons of greens in salads, green smoothies (just toss some romaine, kale, or spinach in -- it won't affect the flavor), green juices (use a base of apple or carrot to take the edge off and some lemon for zip), marinated greens, steamed greens, sauteed greens, green soups. Remember the guy in Forrest Gump who knew a million things to do with shrimp? Be like that with greens.

2. Eat plants, different plants with different colors for different phytochemicals. Eat leaves, stems, roots, flowers, fruits, and seeds. Have salad. Crudites with a nice dip. Steamed, baked, stir-fried and sauteed veggies. Grab an apple, a carrot, an orange, a pear.

3. Eat whole food. If you like bread, get the grainiest, grittiest, heaviest, chewiest bread you can find: it's full of fiber, B vitamins, and honest nutrients that the white stuff we used to play "communion" with, and with the sun-tanned varieties that are white bread masquerading as whole-grain, just won't give you. Eat brown rice. Eat potatoes with their skins on. Get more of your fats from whole foods -- olives, sunflower seeds, ground flax seeds, nuts, soybeans -- and less from extracted oils. And leave refined sugar, artificial sweeteners, and the soft drinks that are full of them alone: they're really hurting you. Drink water, seltzer water, soft drinks that are half seltzer and half fruit juice, coconut water, and fresh vegetable juice. Your body will thank you kindly.

There's plenty more you could do, refining and experimenting and reading and learning, but this alone will transform the way you feel and the way you see your life.

30 days to a charmed life Day 24: live preventatively -- reposted

Someone wrote that this post is not in the archives, so I'm reposting.

If you don't want to have regrets, live in a way that doesn't create them. I saw a young mom this morning on the subway and she was giving her little girl a hard time. I almost said something, but I didn't want to make things any tougher for this adorable little child. Had I said something, it would have been: "There will come a day when you want nothing more than the friendship and admiration of the person that you are now treating with such disregard and disrespect." I knew I was watching not only an unhappy little girl today, but also the sowing of the mother's future unhappiness.

Preventative living is being kind to the people you love right here, right now. It's doing what you need to do and not what seems like fun, and saving some money regardless of the great shoe sale going on. It's taking care of your body, even when that's boring and sweaty and lacks whipped cream.

I had occasion to share this list with someone today. It falls under the rubric of "prevention" so I thought I'd share it with you. Now, obviously, I'm not saying that what you eat can prevent all cancer and sometimes things just happen and they just plain suck. However, the science is clear that some cancer can indeed be prevented with the proper nutrients, so why not hedge your bets? This list comes from one of my favorite books on the subject, Eat to Beat Cancer: A Research Scientist Explains How You and Your Family Can Avoid Up to 90% of All Cancers, by R. Robert Hatherill, Ph.D.

30 days to a charmed life Day 15: Balance flexibility with commitment

Khalid Almasoud.jpgHave you noticed that some people aren't committed to much of anything, that they tend to live an anything-goes kind of life? And that others are so rigid and rule-bound that any kind of flexibility is frowned upon and the "way we do things" is sacrosanct? Neither of these extremes helps anybody to a charmed life.

My invitation to you today is to find where you can be solid in your convictions and where you can give yourself a little elastic-waist treatment. Nobody can tell you where the line needs to be: this is your life. You just need a line somewhere.

I'm finding a compromise like this right now with my diet as the cold weather approaches. If you're a regular reader of this blog, you know I've been eating a mostly raw diet for months and loving it: I feel healthier than I ever have. But a cold snap last week told me that in November and January and March, I'm going to want some cooked food, maybe every day. I had to figure out a way to keep the benefits of raw and still keep myself warm and comfy-feeling through the winter. So I came up with this:

  • Make smoothies with no frozen ingredients, and add muesli (rolled oats with fruits and nuts) to my breakfast choices
  • Warm up raw soups and eat some hot soup on cold days
  • Add steamed vegetables and baked potatoes, yams, and squash to the dinner menu
  • Have some milllet, brown rice, or quinoa on occasion
  • Make fresh vegetable juice with greens every day
  • Have hot drinks as desired -- Celestial Seasonings Bengal Spice Tea is the most delicious, all-herbal chai: with some almond or Brazil nut milk and a little stevia, oh my gosh, it's good.
Here's one of my winter soup recipes you may wish to try:

Creamy Beany Greenie Soup

4-6 stalks of kale, stemmed
14 ounces cooked or canned garbanzos or red beans
16 oz. vegetable broth
1/4 tsp. natural earth or sea salt
1/4 tsp. lemon pepper
1/2 tsp. onion powder
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
1 Tbls. coconut oil, optional

Lightly steam the kale in a small amount of water (3-5 minutes). Add the vegetable broth and half the beans, and blend until smooth. Add blended mixture back to the pot and add remaining beans and seasonings, heating until everything is warm enough. Add the optional coconut oil for an even creamier texture. Makes 2 entree servings or 4 appetizer servings.

Swine flu prevention

My friend Elizabeth sent me this and I thought I'd share it with you. It's simple, straightforward, and makes a lot of sense:

Prevent Swine Flu - Good Advice

Dr. Vinay Goyal is an MBBS,DRM,DNB (Intensivist and Thyroid specialist) having clinical experience of over 20 years. He has worked in institutions like Hinduja Hospital ,Bombay Hospital , Saifee Hospital , Tata Memorial etc. Presently, he is heading our Nuclear Medicine Department and Thyroid clinic at Riddhivinayak Cardiac and Critical Centre, Malad (W).

The following message given by him, I feel makes a lot of sense and is important for all to know

The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/throat. In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible to avoid coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is.

While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps, not fully highlighted in most official communications, can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to sto ck N95 or Tamiflu):

1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications).

2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe or slap).

 3. *
Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't trust salt). *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.

4. Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water . *Not everybody may be good at Jala Neti or Sutra Neti (very good Yoga asanas to clean nasal cavities), but *blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.*
Neti pots and sinus rinse kits are available at the drug store and relatively inexpensive..under $15.

5. *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). *If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.

6. *Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can. *Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.
