Financial Prayer Circle

Let us pray today for all our friends, family and neighbors who are worried about money, have suffered a job loss or are struggling to survive personally and financially.

So I'll sit here now and I'll pray to You
('though I can't really say why),
as the walls collapse around me
and my loved ones suffer and die,

and my health gives way and bills pile up
and time slips too quickly past,
as I count all the joys life's denied me,
and those that didn't last.

I'll offer You thanks, my Creator,
for the gifts You've yet to repeal;
for walking and vision and laughter,
for music, and dreams that seem real,

for people who love me and seasons that change,
for my body's own memories of love,
and I'll sit here and pray in the darkness,
for all the good it does.

Money Coaching Monday: Empowering Our Children

Thumbnail image for iStock_000003138265XSmall.jpg
Teaching your children to be empowered to help out at an early age is important. Starting at about age 7, most children are capable of handling simple tasks and responsibilities around the house. This not only helps children to learn important and necessary life skills, it also greatly increases their self-esteem and makes them feel capable. When we do everything for our kids and don't not allow them to participate in our lives or share in the responsibilities of family life, we actually cheat them a little.

One of the greatest gifts you can ever give a child is a sense of their own capacity. While it is great to be a loving parent who caters to their child's needs, too much caretaking can actually make a child feel incapable of doing things on their own and make the world seem too big or scary. Of course, we always need to match the task and responsibility with what is appropriate for the child's age. Give them tasks that are safe and that they can succeed at. Our children really enjoy being given responsibility (even if they balk!)...it makes them feel good about themselves!

When families are stretched financially, it may not be possible to give an allowance for chores. If this is the case in your family, simply explain to your children that as they get older they get new responsibilities and that everyone in a family needs to pitch in...that's part of what it is to be a family. Here are some healthy reasons to empower your children to be a member of your household team:

1. It encourages them to be creative with their gifts and talents.

2. It will increase their self-esteem.

3. It will provide them with valuable life experience.

4. It will teach them to understand the meaning and value of money.

5. It is life-changing to learn that if you truly want something, you have the capacity
to find ways to earn and create it for yourself.

When our children know this, we can rest assured that they will be always be okay in the world.

Peace and Blessings!

Good News Friday: One Million More Volunteers in 2009

Thumbnail image for iStock_000000164248XSmall.jpg
There's an interesting and wonderful new trend in America since the recession has begun that I find both fascinating and heart-warming. In the middle of the greatest recession of our time, when millions have lost their jobs and homes, Americans have been showing up (big time!) to help others.

According to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, over 63 million Americans volunteered their time to at least one organization during 2009. That means almost 27% of the population are engaged in some charitable activity to help others in America and I think that's AWESOME!

Someone said recently in one of my blog's that Americans show who they really are during hard times, and I couldn't agree more. We are definitely a country of people who well represents the phrase "when the going gets tough, the tough get going." And I, for one, feel very proud of us for this.

So, I'd like to say thank you to every man, woman, and child who has taken a stand for someone, or cause, in the last year and given their time, energy and/or resources, either in support of the common good or for those less fortunate. Thank you and God Bless you...keep doing your good work. You do make a difference in the world and don't ever let anyone convince you otherwise.

In particular, I'd like to thank one very special person in my life --- Anjelica Price-Rocha ---- my 17-year-old daughter. Anjelica has volunteered countless hours in the last month organizing events with school and fellow students on behalf of Haiti. To date, her high school has raised over $5,000 dollars for Haiti during their time of need.

I am so proud of you, Anjelica...for your leadership and your desire to make a difference. You're my Hero and I hope to someday grow-up to be just like you. XXXOOO! Mom

Meditation for Reducing Financial Stress

Thumbnail image for cozumel_021_1280.jpg
One of the easiest ways to reduce stress and achieve a sense of calm and balance is to meditate daily. In fact, meditation is now scientifically proven to be one of the most effective ways to manage stress and improve your health and well-being. If you're experiencing financial stress, practice this simple meditation daily.

Ocean Meditation
I love the ocean. It's the place that I always return to for spiritual nourishment and to restore my sense of well-being. Unfortunately, I can't always get to the ocean when I need to rejuvenate so I created this meditation to bring the ocean to me. It works quite well...I hope it helps you, too.

To begin, find a quiet place to sit comfortably where you will not be interrupted for at least ten minutes. Close your eyes and visualize yourself sitting on the sand, facing the ocean on a warm summer day. You are the only one on the entire beach. Feel the sun against your skin, taste the salt in the air, see the waves crashing in and out before you. Once you have created this image firmly in your mind, begin to take deep breaths in and out with the rhythm of the waves.

Breathe in as each wave comes to shore. Breathe out as each wave returns to the ocean. Hold each inward breath to the count of six and then exhale fully to the count of six. Keep your eyes closed the entire time and continue to hold the vision of yourself sitting on the beach in your mind's eye. Once you have established this breathing pattern, imagine that your own breath is the sound of the ocean waves moving in and out to and from the shore. Now with each breath you take and each wave that comes in, feel yourself breathing in positive healing energy. With each exhale, feel yourself releasing any negative energy you may be holding into the vastness of the ocean where it simply disappears.

Do this meditation daily for at least ten minutes or whenever you feel your stress level increasing. It'll make a difference!

Peace and Blessings!

A Blessing for Happiness
Metta Sutta (Stuttanipata)

May everyone be happy and safe,
and may their hearts be filled with joy.
May all living beings live in Security and in Peace--
Beings who are frail or strong,
Tall or short, big or small,
Visible or not visible, near or far away,
Already born or yet to be born.
May all of them dwell in perfect tranquility.
Let no one do harm to anyone.
Let no one put the life of anyone in danger.
Let no one, out of anger or ill will,
   wish anyone any harm.
