Wednesday's Blessing: Farewell, Michael Jackson

Wednesday July 1, 2009

Today's blessing is dedicated to Michael Jackson. Farewell, Michael...may you finally rest in  peace.

Into the Mist and Mystery

As rain falls on the forest ground,
As rivers run 'til the sea is found,
As grasses grow and birds abound,
Our dear one has departed this earthly round.

Give thanks for the life he lived so full.
Give thanks for his love and care.
Give thanks for the time he gave us, too,
And the beauty of the world he shared.

Farewell our friend, we loved you so.
Into the mist and mystery you go.
And we will wait as all renews,
And see you again in the morning dew.

~ Rev. John C. Robinson, Ph.D., D.Min

Michael was certainly talented and seemed to have a gentle spirit and a kind heart. I was not a huge fan of his music. His death has caused me to question this world's emphasis on money, status, and idolizing human beings. Michael always struck me as a sad figure. Hiding behind masks, he seemed anxious and unable to find peace. Drug abuse, failed marriages nothing providing ultimate joy and peace. The point is not to demonize MJ as the personification of all that is wrong in pop culture. Rather, his life and all too early death should once again remind us that money, fame, and materialism will not bring peace, but quite the opposite. How many others have ended up similarly? Elvis Presley, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix etc., etc. Please do not equate MJ with Jesus, or make him into some kind of messiah. He was a talented person consumed by the trappings of fame and his own, and our, human frailties. I don't think he would want you do set him up as an idol. Please just pray for his family and enjoy his music and get in touch with truth and reality.
