Fresh Morning: 6 Reasons to Eat Oatmeal

sun1.jpg What’s better on a chilled fall or winter morning than a bubbling pot of oatmeal?  I try to have a bowl for breakfast 2-3 times a week during the cold months (when I’m not eating my favorite peanut butter crunch toast, that is).  My favorite oatmeal method?  Rolled oats (not instant, not steel cut) with a handful of defrosted frozen blueberries (I pick bags of blubes in the summer and chow all winter), a scant tablespoon of dark brown sugar, a drizzle of maple syrup, a whisper of cinnamon, and a splash of milk.  Ok, now I can face the day.

But if you know oatmeal is good, do you know why it’s good for you?  Here are 6 reasons that are attributed on many sites to the American Cancer Society.  The list starts with the fact that oats contain both soluble and insoluble fiber, which is healthful because:

1. Insoluble fiber’s cancer-fighting properties are due to the fact that it attacks certain bile acids, reducing their toxicity.

2. Soluble fiber may reduce LDL cholesterol without lowering HDL cholesterol. LDL is bad; HDL is good.

3. Soluble fiber slows down the digestion of starch. This may be
beneficial to diabetics because, when you slow down the digestion of
starch, you avoid the sharp rises in your blood sugar level that
usually occur following a meal.

4. It has been found that those who eat more oats are less likely to
develop heart disease, a disease that is currently widespread in the
United States.

5. The phytochemicals in oat may also have cancer-fighting properties.

6. Oats are a good source of many nutrients including vitamin E,
zinc, selenium, copper, iron, manganese and magnesium. Oats are also a
good source of protein.

Don’t even get me started on the benefits of the blueberries (antioxidants), bananas (potassium), and various dried fruits (more fiber) that you might mix into your bowl. 

So fire up the stove!  Have a good oatmealy morning.  And share – how do you oatmeal?

Great article! I love the “it is a very filling food” comment… Lord knows I need to feel fuller more often! Thanks for the info.Well Oatmeal has many great properties, but it doesn’t work for everyone. If you’re a fast metabolizer, it can put you into a state of hypoglycemia. I throw a handful of raw oats in my morning smoothie…they soften up in the liquid and slurp up through a fat straw just fine.

Before adding oatmeal to my smoothies I grind it in a coffee grinder, or chopper and I add it to gravies, soups…and to make soups palatable to babies, I also grind different veggies (like baby food in jars) and add them to meatsauce and sphagetti, meatloaf, etc. In the meatloaf I soak the oats in a little water and form into meatloaf with the groundup veggies….

I add 2 tablespoons of raisins to the water when I cook my oatmeal. Then sprinkle with cinnamon and serve with skim milk. It ALWAYS sounds good! YUM!

I make my oatmeal with milk, butter and sugar. I put the water, salt, oatmeal in the pot, bring to a boil and start adding the milk and butter and suar as it is cooking. I let it cook until it get creamy, then it is ready. I eat it every morning, it is so good.

I make my oatmeal in the regular way when it is almost done I add cinnamon sunflower seeds and flaxseed and sugar substitute. and add my milk.

Mic it for about 3 min. then add rasberries. mix it up. My tastebuds sing and dance-yummy.

I have a small, inexpensive rice cooker that does a wonderful job on oatmeal. I replace about a third of the water with skim milk, and add a few raisins, (the tiny snack boxes work great), and a few dried cranberries, flip the switch and let it go. I do have to keep an I on it, as the auto shutoff on the rice cooker doesn’t work with oatmeal, but the even heat makes it creamy without stiring, and the fruit plumps up very nicely. I sprinkle a little bit of cinnamon, (and sugar if the raisins aren’t sweetened), add a couple of slices of buttered toast, and I’m good to go. Occasionally, I’ll add a few chocolate chips after it’s cooked. Yummy!!!!

I haven’t had oatmeal for a long time but just started having it earlier this week as I am trying to eat a little better than eating out like I often do. I had it 4 days in a row last week and plan to keep it up from here. I use 2 packs and add how water then add some sugar.

I eat oatmeal every morning, add natural applesauce, lots of cinommon, handful of walnuts!!!!! I also make oatmeal soup!!!!! I am diabeatic and have lost 22 lbs 6 months, 2 sizes… and now have my blood sugar perfect… Thanks to oatmeal!!!!!

I usually add dark chocolate 70% cocoa to my oatmeal every morning. I get the benefit of antioxidants in dark chocolate as well.

I soak my oats in skim milk over night, chop up an apple or pear in the AM to mix in, sprinkle on some cinnamon and some organic cane sugar, warm it for a couple of minutes toss on some raw walnuts and enjoy! mmmmm good!

My grandma always gave us oatmeal with our favorite flavor of ice cream on it…you got your sugar and your milk all at once…….my favorite is butter pecan on it with a touch of brown sugar and cinnamon. THANK YOU GRANDMA…..misss you and love you

Try using applejuice instead of water or milk. Cinnamon, raisins ,peacons or walnuts, yummy yummy to the tummy,plus a reduction in high chlolestrol like from 234 to 178.

if you don’t have much time in the mornings, get the instant oatmeal and use all the oats in the package but only a little less than half of the sugar in the package(just enough to flavor it up)(it will seperate when you pour it out) This way you get all the health benefits but not all that extra sugar!! Cinnamon is the yummiest!!

Hello,
Don’t forget that each of these ingredients are good for health – but TOGETHER their mix could be terrible. Check with ayurveda’s food to avoid together :)
