Our Lady of the BlueberryOur Lady of Weight Loss wants to know …
Got the Belly Fat Blues? The benefits of eating blueberries, a fruit that is rich in antioxidants, has been known for some time, but now new studies indicate that blueberries may be an important component to losing abdominal fat – the kind of fat that is linked to heart disease and diabetes.
Blueberries for Belly Fat Blues.

In the study, “Blueberries Boost Heart Health” presented at Experimental Biology 2009, researchers at University of Michigan’s Cardioprotection Research Laboratory found that the naturally occurring chemical in blueberries, anthocyanins, may change the process in which the body stores and processes glucose or sugar for energy. This change in process can result in loss of body fat, which in turn reduces the risk of heart disease and diabetes.
In the centerpiece to their study, for a period of 90-days researchers fed rats that were bred to be obese either a high-fat or low-fat diet enriched with whole blueberry powder or carbohydrates as 2% of their total fat. The end results showed that the rats that were fed blueberries had less abdominal fat, lower cholesterol and improved glucose control and insulin sensitivity. In addition, the low-fat blueberry diet resulted in lost body weight and fat mass (as compared to the rats fed a high-fat diet).
More research is in the works, but I think it may be safe to say that blueberries are good for you and may well help to cure your belly fat blues!
