Tough Questions for Sarah Palin About Her Faith

posted by swaldman | 1:00pm Thursday September 25, 2008

As he prays over Sarah Palin, Bishop Thomas Muthee says, “Make her way my God. Bring finances her way even for the campaign in the name of Jesus.”This tape (hat-tip Andrew Sullivan) reminds us that, among other things, there are still legitimate questions that need to be asked of Sarah Palin about her faith, and the role of religion in politics. As regular readers of this space know, I’ve been defending many of Palin’s religious comments and criticizing unfair charges against her (here, here, here, here, here, and here)However, there are some fair, and important, she ought to answer before election day. My partial list:1) How do you know it was “God’s will” that a natural gas pipeline be built in Alaska? 2) What did you mean when you said that your work as governor would be hampered “if the people of Alaska’s heart isn’t right with God”?3) Do you believe there’s a significant chance that End Times will occur during your lifetime?4) Barack Obama has talked about the areas in which he disagreed with Rev. Jeremiah Wright. What are the areas in which you disagree with the teachings of the Assembly of God church that you left?5) How did you feel when Bishop Muthee was praying for God to direct campaign contributions into your campaign? Was that appropriate? Do you think God answered those prayers?6) You signed a bill creating a Christian Heritage? Would you have signed a Muslim Heritage week?7) John McCain said the Constitution established America as a Christian nation. Do you agree? What are your questions?

what is your relationship with Third Wave churches and Joel’s Army? Is it true that 3 of the 4 churches you have attended are part of this group of churches? Is it true that these churches teach a form of christianity that excludes from the group of christians all other christian demoninations?

Look, in the end it doesn’t matter.
The Constitution, not a person’s religious views, are what guide this country.
This is just a smoke screen to divert attention from Obama’s racist church.

Meanwhile, Barack Obama goes on without being questioned in depth about belonging to a cult for 20 years that was founded upon the beliefs of the Black Panther Party and Malcolm X (according to Black Liberation Theology’s own founder, James Cone), and that feels God should be killed if he isn’t spiritually “black.” And while my memory is a bit hazy, I think they also hold that white people can’t get into heaven (though I could very well be wrong on this one point).
Why isn’t Obama being hounded for following the teachings of a racist cult, while Palin is being hounded for being a member of the largest Pentecostal denomination?
That’s a far more pertinent question in my mind, though it seems most journalists are terrified to ask it, perhaps for fear of being branded a racist for questioning a racist belief system.

I tire of hearing about politicians’ faith. The link between religion and morality is far weaker than the link between politician and liar. In a secular country, if we are indeed still secular, the beliefs of the politician should remain private. I’d rather have somebody who helps the people than have somebody who says they will pray to ask God to help the people.

Some of you please get your facts straight before you publish them. They kicked the leader out not the churches. I don’t remember his name correctly but I think it is William Brenerman. I have not heard Sarah Palin say anything about her belief that indicated that she is connected to the Kansas City groups which follows his teachings to the day. I will also say that I am a member of a church that has many members that go along with this teaching but that doesn’t mean that I agree with it, as a matter of fact I stayed there trying to bring as many out from under it’s influence as I can. I agree with the Obama statement, he get a free ride and Sarah gets ripped over everything. Please try truly praying for her and maybe you will see her in a new light.

Good questions!
By the way, on the point about Obama and his church. I think the reason it doesn’t come up now is that we had a good solid month or two where that was THE topic of conversation. he was asked about it interviews and in debates. Palin is new on the scene and may become our vice president in about 2 months, so we have to cram in a whole lot of question. The fact that she hasn’t had a real press conference and or given many interviews means that the questions pile up unanswered instead of easily dispatched.
Having said that, Obama should be asked those questions again, too.
Of course, i do have to admit that, as much as I like religion-oriented questions, even I would put these down the list compared to questions on the economy, Iraq, health care and terrorism

Important questions, yes, though a part of me is scared to hear the answers. No, I think I’ll just not vote for her or her running mate. A much more important question to ask her, after hearing her interview with Katie Couric, would be, “Are you freakin’ kidding? The fact Alaska sits geographically between Russia and Canada gives you sufficient foreign policy experience and expertise to be president of the United States? Who do you think you’re kidding?”

Hi Steve – I’ll answer them for you.
1) I acually said lets pray that its God’s will. But, if you want to believe that I believed it was God’s will, who are you to tell me that I shouldn’t believe it was His will? By the way, just because it’s God’s will doesn’t mean it gets done, the way we want, when we want, by or how we want.
2) Are you saying the job is easier if people’s hearts are wrong with God? By the way I meant my job would be hampered by people who lie, work against me in a dishonest or corrupt way, or try to take revenge for me being elected. I know you wanted me to say I meant God is on my side, but I’m not falling for it.
3)Some days I think the End is right around the corner and sometimes not. What difference does it make? Do you think I’m going to wrestle the briefcase out of John’s grasp and push the big button, just to fulfill my crazy premonitions?
4) That’s great Barack spelled out his differences with Rev. Wright, good for him, but it doesn’t mean I need to do the same, with any organization or any person. God guides my life, not churches on earth.
5) I thought it was nice for the Bishop to pray for my campaign. You mean you’ve never heard about anyone who prayed for money? Anyway it isn’t up to me to grade someone’s prayers (a little tacky, don’t you think?) I don’t know if God answered them.
6) Are there Muslims in Alaska? Do they want a Heritage Week? Do Muslims have a long heritage in Alaska? Do the people of Alaska want a Muslim heritage week? I guess that means I can’t answer your silly question just at the moment.
7) I believe the country was founded by people many of whom were Christian. I do not know what Sen McCain may have said on the topic, and I am sure not going to rely on you to tell me exactly what he said and in what context.

Questions for Palin:
Why do you want to relax gun laws in America, the country with the worst gun violence on the entire planet?
Why do you think a woman who is raped & impregnated should be forced by the state to have the baby?
Why do you claim “taking the war” to Iraq is justified, considering that Iraqis had nothing to do with 9/11?
When can we expect a McCain/Palin administration to invade Iran?
Why do you think your God is concerned with matters like the Alaska pipeline, or any money-making ventures such as this?

I was thrilled to see this video. Anytime someone wants to invoke the power and blessing of our Heavenly father on a possible future politician I say “AMEN”! Don’t you think we have had enough politicians who have shown us their greed, and their almost treasonous behavior in thier positions toward the American people? I am a registered Republican and believe me, I am not proud of too much that has and hasn’t happened in this present administration. Christians in the United States today face unmerciful ridicule by the far left and unbelievers. The Bible assures us that Christians will have difficult lives because of their beliefs. I so admire Sarah Palin for letting America know she and her family are Christians. If you don’t get what I am saying, you couldn’t possibly be a Christian and understand the nature of evil described in the New Testament. God Bless Sarah Palin and her family. Most of all, God bless America because we are about to implode due to our continual sin and immoral behavior.

Have you read any of the various reports that are streaming out of Alaska in the past few days about more corruption, lies, hypocrisy, and bad governance there? This is why candidates should just shut up about their faith, since when it comes out that they are phonies, they give faith a bad name.

I have a few questions I’d toss into that ring for Sarah Palin;
1) Sarah, you’ve been quoted as saying, “sex education will get no help from me.” Can you clarify that comment?
2) Sarah, in light of your opposition to contraceptives, how do you plan on following through with American’s pledge to fight HIV/AIDS at home and abroad?
3) Sarah, you’ve started that you support teaching Creationism in the classroom. Which religions Creationism were you talking about, and how would you fairly implement its inclusion in the curriculum?
4) Sarah, you’ve said that you are against a woman’s right to choose even in cases of Incest and Rape. What comments would you make to a 12 year old girl who was violently raped by her own father and finds herself pregnant?
5) Sarah, while the Mayor of Wasilla, rape victims were forced to pay for their own emergency examinations and the forensic rape kits used to help police catch the attacker. Despite a Bill to repeal this policy, which was unanimously approved by the state legislator, and despite the chief of your own police openly fighting that Bill for 6 months, you claim to have had no knowledge of this practice. In hindsight, do you think you should have been paying more attention to the politics playing out in your own town of 6,500?
6) Sarah, what is your honest opinion about Dinosaurs?
7) Sarah, some might consider this a low-blow, but I think it is highly relevant. You insist that ‘abstinence only’ is the only form of sex-education children should receive. Yet you were unable to make this practice work under your own roof. Tell America how you justify the assertion that it should be forced on them by way of limiting what is currently taught in schools? 8) Sarah, you claim to be a champion of budget-balancing, yet the town of Wasilla enjoyed a budget surplus prior to your election, and they were left with a nearly $20,000,000 deficit when you left. How to you justify this fact to the American people in light of your claims?
9) Sarah, you started off by agreeing to cooperate with the investigating into your alleged abuses of Power. Yet now, you, your former staff, and your family are flat-out refusing. Were you lying before, or just kidding?
I could think of more, but it depresses me to know that these important questions will never get answered. Please god; don’t let this psycho get in!

Steven,
What I got from your interview on Fresh Air is that unless there is a direct connection between a specific piece of liturgy and a clearly pushed nuclear button, there is no theomilitary action taking place. Your inability to either see or document the connection between fundamentalist politics and the war in Iraq/reelection of Bush, makes me think that you don’t have a threshold for alarm. Near the beginning of the war, The Heritage Foundation clearly pushed, on NPR, no less, that Jesus himself would want the war in Iraq. It disturbs me that this clear example doesn’t fit with Sarah Palin’s comments in your mind as dangerous. If they happen in different congregations, they must be benign? Do you find Islamic fundamentalists who call for holy war more disturbing than Christians who do the same? The duality of these warring peoples, both of whom are besmirching their core values in this war, should send up a red flag about the connection between religion and war. While that connection is historic, it is also historically disturbing and usually used as example for the aberration of religion. There are real, immoral murders happening as a result of deluded, strong believers who are being misled into violent politicization of religions founded on peace and self sacrifice. If these don’t “set off your alarms” as Terri Gross asked you, what would? Why even address the issue if the very name “Religilous” doesn’t patently use the obvious examples of religion and military zealotry so apparent to the not braindead? Do honor killings bug you? Does burning your wife when you die bother you? Does sending boys out to kill others in the name of Jesus bug you? I really question your ability to connect the dots you are supposedly looking at on this topic. Maybe you could network with Human Rights Watch and correlate some of your seemingly innocuous examples with the bodies of innocent children killed by King George and the religious right in America. Seems simple to me. Maybe your “think” tank has walls that are too high for perception. I heartily encourage you to make some connections that Bill Maher and quite a lot of “us” seem apparent. If you find anything out of line with these, please report your findings. Please.

Jesus said more during his 3 days of resurrection than this woman has (will) in 3 months of campaigning.
I still wouldn’t vote for Jesus for Vice President.
There is ever mounting evidence that Sarah Palin lacks the ability to distinguish between what she believe to be right and what is right for everyone else. While I believe that a person’s beliefs and family life should have no bearing on his or her politics; it is ultimately the politicians themselves who bring these issues up. If Sarah Palin didn’t express her beliefs through action and inaction in executive policy, we would have no reason to bring them into question.
Just one more item on the LOOOOONG list of reasons why she is unfit to manage the free world.
America is the only political region on the planet with such diverse religious freedoms and to condemn them or to embrace the beliefs of one group in favor of another perpetuates fundamentalism, ignorance, and discrimination.

Listening to Mr. Waldman on NPR in Baltimore and being very interested in religion- can you please pass this to him?
I had the thought- overall this is a thoughtful person (of course, in need of some spiritual guidance).
My questions? At one point he discussed Ms. Palin’s view of war and Iraq. Does he think God- as apparently does Ms. Palin- would approve of war? God’s son certainly didn’t. (See Sermon on the Mount.)
2 Ms. Palin approved a Christian Heritage Week in Alaska. but Steve didn’t mention the possibility of an Inuit or native American Heritage week?
I got the over all feeling that the nuances were not there. I think religion- a la the Sermon on the Mount, Rumi, Zen is very political- it is left and it is pacifist (except in cases like John Brown’s).
I am severely tempted to say- THOSE WHO DO NOT SHARE THIS VIEW ARE ONE W THE DEVIL!
Is it possible that they will burn in hell?

Your interpretation of Palin’s veiled remark over God’s will for Iraq war is way off the mark. The main idea behind her statement is the “Armageddon” prophecy fulfilment plan, and she knows that the American evangelists get very excited about that kind of God’s plan. Palin is faithfully following president Reagan’s view of Armageddon basically to stir up her evangelical base.
But we all know that it is God who is supposed to fulfill those prophecies himself. But why do the evangelists are running ahead of God’s time to execute Biblical prophecies all by themselves without God? No wonder, Iraq is in such a terrible mess!
