The Obama-Is-An-Arab Line and the Rush Limbaugh Factor

posted by swaldman | 11:03am Monday October 13, 2008

Over the weekend we saw John McCain correcting a woman who said she didn’t trust Obama because he’s Arab. Some may have wondered where that came from. We’d heard all about horrendous emails claiming Obama is a secret Muslim (not true) but how did that morph into him being an Arab?
To some degree the conflation may result from the fact that many Americans simply believe being Arab and being Muslim are the same thing, even though most Muslims in the world are not Arab (and not all Arabs are Muslim). The fact that Obama’s middle name is Hussein undoubtedly helped make the claim stick, as did the campaign’s recent claim that Obama “pals around with terrorists” (since many Americans equate Arabs with terrorism).
But there’s a simpler explanation for the sudden rise of the Obama-is-an-Arab idea: Rush Limbaugh. On his September 22 radio show, Limbaugh said:

“He’s not black. Do you know he has not one shred of African-American blood? He doesn’t have any African — that’s why when they asked whether he was authentic, whether he’s down for the struggle. He’s Arab. You know, he’s from Africa. He’s from Arab parts of Africa.”

For the record, Obama’s mother is a white from Kansas. His father is from Kenya, a part of central Africa that is not Arab.

Thanks for reporting that. I wondered where that comment was coming from. However, as a number of people have said, McCain should have asked what’s wrong with being Arab. I don’t think he did that. I want to recommend this post on Reason, as I often recommend beliefnet.com posts elsewhere:

Rush Limbaugh keeps showing his ignorance, claiming that Obama, born from a white American mother and a Kenyan father. He is not an Arab, he is not a Muslim, he wasn’t a terrorist at 8 years old. He was 8, I bet the thought, “terrorist” never crossed his young mind. He was 8 for crying out loud.
Vote for a president because you believe they’ve got the best ideas for a better America, not four more years of John Bush McCain politics continued as is for 4 more years. He says the country is a mess and his plan is the one best for middle America, but he leaves out the point that he helped put us where we are by voting with Pres. Bush 90% of the time. Look at his record. And he claims Obama voted to raise taxes numerous times. This is true, but the senator leaves out the oart that the tax increases were for the wealthiest of Americans, believeing they should give some of their excess funds, while leaving middle America alone. This is a major point McCain tells 1/2 truths about. And, after both debates, it was shown McCain misspoke more often than Obama did, he apparently said whatever cam to his good-old-boys way of thinking. Studies of their faces and body language say it’s obvious McCain dislikes and holds bad feeling about Obama, he frowned more and his temper is well documented, there are numerous videos showing him cursing at journalists and an innocent member of one of his audiences. To me, a real war hero captures prisoners. What’s so heroic about being captured and held captive for 5 years? And, on that point, I don’t believe anybody who is fully alive can go through the experience John McCain did, he even admitted they, “broke” him (where’s the heroism in that), being intrrorgated with different forms of torture day after day, leaving the nights to wonder what they’ll do tomorrow, I just don’t see someone how someone who endured that, can come out of such a situation and not be emotionally wounded in some way; maybe that’s where his anger comes from, but I wouldn’t vote for someone who lived in a hole as a POW, interrogated by way of torture for five years because I just don’t think anyone could survive them unscathed, not deeply wounded and an excellent candidate for president, it’s ridiculous to me. And speaking about ridiculous, there’s Sarah Palin, going from city to city whose main objective, given to her by John McCain to slam Obama with more lies and smears because McCain doesn’t want to be seen getting personal like Palin does, with twisted truths and an obvious disdain for Obama herself. That party will take us into the bleak past, they both admitted they’d overturn Roe v Wade, taking more from those who have less, and, as always, give more to those who already have. If this country votes for McCain and he wins this race, it tells you about where this country stands. They’re content being taken advantage of, do not understand what’s at stake here and some are so outdated, they proudly admit, they wouldn’t vote for Obama because he’s bi-racial, because his middle name is Hussein, because of the word going around that he’s a Muslim, and what exactly does that mean to them. There are Muslims with far better ethics and morals than too many Americans. We should have learned from the craziness whirling around Bill Clinton, a good president, because of something he did in private, as has many of the men who’ve served as president. Our status in the world would fall further with McCain, we’ll go into a deep depression. Why are we borrowing money to give to a country that has a large surplus? Why did McCain allow that all to happen, he brags about his record, read it closely and you’ll see McCain took part on shoveling dirt on the middle class, how tied he is to big oil companies. Were things to go way extreme and both candidates’s homes were foreclosed, Obama would be homeless, McCain could just move to one of his other homes, how can he truly understand in the ways Obama quite obviously can? Can he truly relate to the middle class with all his wealth? Obama attended schools he couldn’t afford to attend by winning scholarships, which speaks to his level of intelligence. In the last debate, especially, I found him behaving in a more Presidential manner, cool, calm and collected, making direct eye contact with everyone he spoke to, didn’t even flinch when McCain attacked him, though he did defend himself and clear up the lies. Were he a white man, he’d be so far ahead of McCain by now, it’s a sad statement about America. And how will Palin’s belief in the right to bear arms (to kill innocent, pinned down wolves with modern rifles from a helicopter or airplane) play out in the inner cities. How blind can they both be? And how ignorant, referring to Obama as the antichrist Palin was sent to save us from. Give me a break! It is her personal interpretation of the bible and God that she believes in, whose antiquated ways she uses to help her know how to live life. What makes her so special that God whispered in her ear, declaring the war in Iraq, who never attacked us by the way, the pilots came from Afghanistan, again, declaring the war in Iraq to be a Holy War, a rightous war, blessed by God, just as she was, “chosen” by God. God help us if McCain dies before ending his term and we’re left with a sport killer who think she knows so much about Russia, because she can see it from Alaska. She’s a backwards, proudly ignorant woman who has no business to be part of, or running the gov’t. herself. And Obama is as American as she is and you know what? The economic mess John McCain has helped create what should be what helps control who would run this country in a fresh, new way, I think people are so afraid and unsure, they’ll see beyond skin color and give the right man his chance to make our lives better. He has priorities, plans, and is not afraid to talk about them instead of attacking McCain, as McCain attacks Obama and he doesn’t always clearly tell you his plan, or answer all questions asked. Maybe he’s picked up on Palin’s way and stop talking through the media and speak to Americans directly. Scarey, but I have faith in America and Americans. Go Obama!

Obama has more claim to be called African-American, since his father is actually African, than most African-Americans, who have been here so long that culturally they are Americans, even though they have ancestors who came from Africa.
I don’t blame Limbaugh even though I think he is an unbelievable jerk. It was John McCain who decided to take his campaign down into the mud and decided to exploit the fear and intolerance of his supporters.

People have spent almost two years spreading smear about Obama, including high level Republican officials:
Listen to an interview with the woman that said Obama was an “Arab.” There are two videos, the first one of her statement to McCain and the interview.
Gayle Quinnell: I still do. Yeah. I’m not alone. I go to Burnsville, the main Republican headquarters and I do a lot of work over there. A lot of sending out mail and talking to people. And all the people agree with what I’m saying to you about Obama.
She got a letter from someone at the Republican headquarters that contain “all kinds of bad things about him.” She copied the letter and sent it to 400 in the telephone book.

In McCain’s Gainesville, Va., office, Virginia Republican Party Chairman Jeff Frederick spoke to 30 campaign volunteers who were about to go canvassing door to door. He gave them “talking points, “for instance, the connection between Barack Obama and Osama bin Laden.”
Said Frederick: “Both have friends that bombed the Pentagon,” in a reference to Obama acquaintance William Ayers. “That is scary.”
Added a woman: “And he won’t salute the flag.” male volunteer: “We don’t even know where Senator Obama was really born.”

Fraud is rampent in the states for the counting of votes as well as signing up illegal voters.
It doesn’t matter if you are voting Republica or Democrat is not the issue the issue is the system leading to a fair election.
Many states you do not even need id to vote, so who are you and why should you beable to voice your opinion if we don’t know who you are?
You can take action by calling all or at least the attorney general’s office 202-514-2001 and request these two things:
1. Investigate ACORN fully!!!
2. Help America Vote Act. which enforces accuracy of ID to vote in each state.
the other two are the Dept. of justice- 202-456-1414 and Congressional district 202-224-3121.
Doing nothing will insure a total election mess!!!!

While on the surface the Arab line sounds like a smear, his father is listed on his birth certificate as Arab-African. His father is actually 12.5% African and 87.5% Arabic decent.
Limbaugh’s claim that he has not one shred of African blood is false. Obama is of African decent. Although he is more caucasian and Arabic than he is African.
Obama is not legally allowed to claim he is black on forms since you have to be 1/8th black to claim black status, Obama is only 1/16th.
I believe Obama is hiding this, for now, because he wants the overwhelming support of the black vote (polls show blacks favor Obama 99% to 1% for McCain, whites are split 50% McCain, 47% Obama).
Obama’s race does not matter to me. What matters is his integrity, and I question that if he isn’t forward about his race. He continues to let the lie persist that he is black. The media is also reporting heavily that he is black which is creating the false impression in a vast majority of minds that Obama is black. In fact, most people wouldn’t even question the statement that Obama is 50% black.
