MercyMe’s “I Can Only Imagine” Celebrates 10th Anniversary

posted by Joanne Brokaw | 9:25am Thursday February 5, 2009

MercyMe.jpgCan you believe that it’s been 10 years since MercyMe’s song “I Can Only Imagine” took both Christian and mainstream music by storm, making the band a household name?
The song, which became a personal anthem for hurting people, raced up the Top 40, AC, Christian and Country charts and is still a favorite on radio playlists, 10 years later.
To mark the anniversary, MercyMe is releasing 10 on April 7th. The new CD/DVD set showcases twelve number one singles and videos spanning the band’s career. The album contains favorites like “Word Of God Speak,” “You Reign,” “Spoken For,” and of course, “I Can Only Imagine,” including a bonus track of the song performed with the London Symphony Orchestera. The DVD contains music videos, the band’s Faith and Fame biography, which aired on the Gospel Music Channel, and the story behind “I Can Only Imagine.”
The album releases April 7th. MercyMe is on the Rock & Worship Roadshow tour with Jeremy Camp, Hawk Nelson, Tenth Avenue North and Addison Road. For more about the tour and MercyMe’s new album, visit the band’s website.

I knew this song made it big when I worked at Cracker Barrel and the servers were singing along to the radio with this song on in the back room (where they cook the food). I like this song, and think that there are probably three main Christian anthems of recent times: early 1990s: Shout to the Lord
2000s: I Can Only Imagine and How Great Is Our God (Chris Tomlin)
I don’t think MercyMe could ever top the success of “I Can Only Imagine.” It was even used on American Idol a few weeks ago! That is their signature song, for sure, and it is the reason we’re still talking about the band 10 years later, after so many other bands came and went.
